With the rapid development of high voltage direct current(HVDC), China Southern Power Grid develop the DC transmission of ultrahigh voltage in the West-East electricity transmission project in recent years. A Power Grid of AC/DC multiple operation has been build with the electricity transmission of ultrahigh voltage, long distance and high capacity. Due to the shortage of local power supply in Guangdong Power Grid, the problem of voltage stability can be caused by the failure of the grid. But Guangdong power grid can improve the system voltage stability and resist the risk caused by grid failures, through installing some automatic reactive power compensation devices. The static synchronous compensator(STATCOM) is A kind of new technology in the field of the reactive power compensation, which meets the requirement.The STATCOM of China Southern Power Grid combined with the latest technology of power electronic and the actual situation. It uses a cascade structure. It’s straight hanging voltage is 35 k V and the capacity is ±200MVar. The injection enhancement gate transistor(IEGT) is used as the power element for the first time, and its frequency is up to 250 Hz. It is the most advanced and the maximum capacity of the dynamic var compensator at present.This paper is based on the engineering examples of the STATCOM Configuration Engineering in Guangdong Power Grid which is at the end of China Southern Power Grid. Firstly, the background of the STATCOM engineering is introduced, including the status and planning of the Guangdong power system, and the necessity of the STATCOM Engineering. Secondly, the configuration scheme of the STATCOM engineering, consisting of 5 alternative 500 k V substation were in-depth comparative study, and the optimization scheme is to be the first phase project of the STATCOM Engineering. Thirdly, the technical characteristics of the STATCOM in Southern Power Grid is introduced, including the main circuit wiring, the valve group and the control strategy. And then, according to the actual conditions the engineering design is done, including electrical primary parts and secondary parts. Finally, through the system commissioning the STATCOM in China Southern Power Grid meets the design requirements and reaches the international advanced level. The implementation process of 35 k V/±200MVar STATCOM engineering project in power grid were introduced in detail, it can provides the reference for the similar project in the future.
