The traditional arcade street is a classical form of urban street in the Lingnan area, which was mostly built during the ‘City Renovation Movement’, on the early of 20 th century. Considering that the arcade street could provide a shaded and comfortable pedestrian space for citizen, and also an appropriate commercial place for business, the climate adaptation of the arcade street is commonly approved. However, the scale of traditional arcade was just according a series of decrees, rather than refers to the traditional common scale or bases on study of city climate, thus, the historical screening and comparing on its mechanism of climate adaptation were absented. The purpose of this study is re-inspecting the climate adaptation of traditional arcade, and attempts to establish the spatial scale model.Based on the above research background and purpose, the first step of this study is conducting field measurements on four streets, which selected from Guangzhou and Kaiping(Chapter II), and calculating microclimate data of these streets by numerical simulation. It could inspect the applicability and reliability of the simulation method by comparing the result of measurements and simulations(Chapter III).In the next chapters, it attempts to establish spatial scale model of the arcade street according numerical simulation. This study divides into two parts, one is medium-scale research on the some Arcade Street blocks in Lingnan area(Chapter IV), which is focus on researching the different layouts of block, orientations and proportions(H/W) of street association with climate adaptation of Arcade Street. Another one is a suite of small-scale research on Arcade Street, including the form, the width of street and the width of pavement(Chapter V). In the progress of comparison, this essay introduces the PET(Physiological Equivalent Temperature) to assess thermal comfort and define the range of scale.In order to examine the availability of the spatial scale model on Arcade Street, this essay apply the scale model on designing arcade in reality(Chapter VI). The Jiefang Road in Guangzhou is chosen whose traditional Arcade Street was demolished during expanding the road for vehicles, and replaced by the broad avenue. Hence, it could make a contrast with three street forms: the original arcade street, the present avenue and the rehabilitative Arcade Street, which is guided by the spatial scale model. According to the result, all Arcade Streets could provide similar climate adaptation, which confirms the feasibility of spatial scale.Finally, based on the climate adaptation, the layout features of traditional arcade street blocks, the form and the width of street, as well as the width of pavement are summarized(Chapter VII). It provides a reference for the design of traditional Arcade Street on scale aspect in the future.
