Shipbuilding industry is an important pillar of national economic development. The ships’ design and construction is complicated comprehensive work which involves many subjects, departments and persons. However, ship design is the first process and information source of construction. It not only affects the management, but also guides the production.At present, ship design is mostly in serial design mode, and the process of preliminary design, detailed design and production design can’t be connected seamless, especially between the pre-design process and the production design process. This mode can cause a lot of repeating work, such as modeling, design and drawing. All of above may waste a lot of resource and cost, and lead to a long shipbuilding cycle and low productivity. Compared to foreign advanced enterprises there is still a large gap. So we need to improve our ship design mode, make close links among the design stages to considered later problems at the early stage, shorten the shipbuilding cycle, improve the quality and reduce the cost. Based on the above, the method that builds and inherits the same model in ship design stages is put forward in this paper. A series of research work centers on this method applied to container ship design process is studied. This paper hopes to provide some valuable reference for concurrent design of shipbuilding companies. The main contents and achievements in this paper include:(1)The basic theory of concurrent engineering and the application of ship design work breakdown are discussed, and the breakdown structure and decomposition process in ship design are given.(2)The contents and working relations of each ship design stage at present are discussed and the problems existing in the design process are summarized. The status and demand of ship concurrent design are analyzed, and container ship concurrent design solutions are proposed.(3)The container ship concurrent design methods are studied. The concurrent and collaborative environment is built. The method to build ship design integrated product team is proposed and its organizational structure is set up. The method of ship product information interaction is discussed. The method of working on the same platform in different design stages is highlighted, and the main design process is constructed based on this method.(4)The container ship concurrent design solutions are applicated and analysed. The establishment process of design plan is discussed in detail. The implementation process is given. The method of later tracking is studied. By the evaluation and the analysis of plan, cycle and errors of ship design can be shortened according to this plan. This would provide valuable reference for ship concurrent design of the same type.
