With the development of the country, more and more people move to cities, which means the rate of urbanization in our country grows continuously. The increase of urban population causes a heavy pressure on urban traffic. The land use in our country could not adapted to the requirements of traffic development. Elevated expressway has a twofold capacity by using the limited land area, and it can either separate the rapid transit and ordinary transit or reduce mutual interference. Therefore, the purposes of improving the traffic efficiency and smoothing traffic flow could be achieved.Elevated expressway can ease the traffic congestion, but the traffic speed on it is relatively fast. Because of the difference between the elevated expressway and ordinary ground transportation, the traffic safety analysis, evaluation of the viaduct, and the traffic safety management are very necessary. In this paper, the influence factors and traffic safety of the elevated expressway have been analyzed by literature review. The main factors that affect the traffic safety includes road alignment, traffic facilities, traffic environment, accident rescue and information, etc. According to the comparison of these factors by the absolute number method, traffic accident severity in the elevated expressway was found to be affected seriously by these factors. In order to evaluate the traffic safety of the elevated expressway more comprehensively, this paper uses the analytic hierarchy process to comprehensively evaluate the traffic safety of the elevated expressway. The qualitative indexes of the index layer mainly include the five main factors, and the quantitative indexes of the index layer include accident frequency and the property damage, which were used to reflect the traffic safety a nd the traffic accident severity.Based on the data analysis of the research targets, the horizontal, vertical and regional comparative analyses between the accident frequency and accident severity have been done. The safety level of the elevated expressway were evaluated by the method of analytic hierarchy process. Evaluation indexes and the evaluation conclusion were analyzed. The safety level of the street in the comparison group was evaluated by the method of analytic hierarchy process, and the conclus ion was compared with the research target. Therefore, traffic safety management measures to reduce or alleviate the severity of the accident were provided in the light of influence factors of the traffic safety in elevated expressway. And the corresponding traffic safety facilities should be set up.
