Chinese cultures belong to typical diversified regional cultures, inherited by villages in all parts of China. As people attached greater and greater importance to diversified cultures, institutional guarantee has been provided for cultural heritages in Chinese villages. In 2012, institutions were developed for protecting traditional villages, in order to institutionally protect cultural heritages in Chinese villages. As social transformation was facilitated, old, diversified and plain traditional cultures of minorities have gradually dwindled and even confronted risks of disappearing. In today’s materialistic society, the existence of traditional villages is just like the last wall of diversified regional cultures in China. However, it is undeniable that with constant transformation and development of the society, more and more traditional villages are progressively disappearing out of sight, replaced by densely distributed high-rise buildings and losing their brilliance. In consideration of relatively widespread distribution of traditional Chinese villages, a little complicated declaration and impossibility of all-round coverage, priority shall be given to China’s experience in protecting famous historical and cultural villages according to its current situation and develop pertinent protection schemes. In this paper, a brief introduction is firstly made to actual situation of the topic and the value of exploring it under this macroscopic background. Next, domestic and foreign theoretical outcomes of protecting and developing traditional villages of minorities are introduced, to define and analyze concept, formation, characteristics and types and so on of such villages. It is proposed that traditional villages of Chinese minorities shall be protected by drawing lessons from famous Chinese historical and cultural villages. Present protection of traditional villages of Chinese minorities is illustrated from the perspective of corresponding concepts, principles and specific methods. Douyan Village, Gejiu, Yunan Province is exemplified to describe its current protection, existing dilemmas and planning principles. Future protection and development plans of Douyan Village are discussed from different perspectives. In the mean time, approaches to managing village construction are introduced in terms of systems, personnel, capital and management. After summing up and learning from domestic and foreign experience in protecting traditional villages, countermeasures and suggestions are put forward for protecting these villages based on awareness of protection, organizational setting and selection of development model. This paper isn’t only helpful for enriching Chinese theoretical literature about protection of traditional villages in minorities, but also favorable for protecting cultural heritages of Chinese minorities, so it is of relatively great theoretical value and practical significance.
