With the rapid development of automobile industry, the demand of automotive shock absorber is increasing significantly. As an important part of shock absorber, the demand of quality and quantity for shock absorber piston rod is also increasing. To achieve the light weight design goal, hollow piston rod have a rapid development and application. Welding is an important technological process in the manufacturing process of hollow piston rod, and the welding process influences the quality of the piston rod directly. At present stage, there are many welding methods. Friction welding is wildly used for the application of piston rod, this technology is very mature and widely used by manufacturers, but there are some inevitable flaws about friction welding, overlap can be created and it will be handled by next production processes. As an advanced welding technology method, laser welding could overcome the inevitable flaws of friction welding. Laser welding has a very broad market prospect and the matching special equipment is very important. At present, the automatic special equipment for laser welding of hollow piston rod is not available.The Laser welding special equipment for automobile shock absorber piston rod, introduced by this thesis, is just based on this background. This time, two kind of piston rod provided by the manufacturer are concerned, and one of them is hollow type. This device is divided into two parts, feeding device and clamping device. Extraction and push function of piston rod are completed by feeding device and clamping and synchronous rotating function are completed by clamping device. The standard and universal technology about industrial components are used in mechanical structure, and the degree of standardization of equipment can be improved. Pneumatic chucks are used for the piston rod clamping, the piston can be clamped and fixed a position quickly and accurately; Synchronous belt and pulley mechanism make pneumatic chuck rotate synchronously; Ball spline shaft and linear slide achieve the motion function of spindle box. Air cylinder pushes the piston rod to reach the designated position; Stepper motor drives spindle rotation to complete the welding work with laser head. A PLC is used to complete all the functions and control the production process. The whole Equipment has good working performance, high efficiency and security, and then improves the automation degree of the whole process about laser welding of piston rod.The Laser welding special equipment researched in this paper can be referenced by following research of welding equipment with higher efficiency and more comprehensive.
