The Manifestation Of Traditional Chinese Culture In The Context Of Modern Architecture

The process of "globalization" and "rapid urbanization" has created increasing demand for cultural discussions; among those, one essential problem facing us modern citizens is the inheritance and development of traditional Chinese culture, and how to invigorate and innovate it to serve today’s urban construction. The research on the manifestation of traditional Chinese culture in the context of modern architecture is an attempt for such problem, based on the core idea of analyzing and creating a symbiotic relationship between traditional culture and modern architecture.Architecture is the product of an era, a carrier of cultural memory, worthy of inheriting and promoting. Meanwhile, many ideas from traditional architecture fit awkwardly into our modern life in aspects such as functionality, materials, and crafts. To address this, the approach of this work is to promote traditional architecture from the perspective of its represented traditional culture. By probing for the essence of traditional culture behind the architecture, we attempt to bridge the gap between Chinese traditional culture and modern architectural pursuits, to avoid the misfit of simple formal imitation. The rest of the abstract gives an outline.First, this work analyzes the relevant background and previous research, demonstrates the goal and importance, namely of the research on the value of traditional Chinese culture in the context of modern architecture.Next, we analyze the cultural background behind traditional Chinese architecture, and attempt to connect the creative work in traditional Chinese culture and modern architecture; we draw lessons from foreign cases of learning from traditional culture in practical architecture, and speculate the influential factors in foreign methods for theoretical research and cultural horizon, to achieve further understanding of traditional Chinese culture from the perspective of modern architecture; in turn, we hope this would make their integration more precise.Moreover, from the analysis of contemporary Chinese architects’ works , we attempt to compile the expression mechanism of traditional culture in modern architecture, in aesthetic, spatial and ecological aspects.Lastly, we look forward to the renaissance of traditional Chinese culture in modern architecture, and summarize specific techniques for such expression, as reference for future architectural works.
