Along with the widening and broading conservation system of cultural heritage in recent years, the preservation of the urban modern and contemporary architectural heritage has been switched gradually from coastal areas to inland cities located in mid-west. Xi'an and Taiyuan, as the typical inland traditional cities, the development of the modern and contemporary architecture has characteristics of the lag and unbalance in development, limited degree of modernization. In the progress of protection, the modern and contemporary architecture faced with adverse conditions, inadequate protection, serious damages, and misunderstanding of heritage value, which have resulted in the crisis of the urban historical culture inheritance. Therefore, how to identify the modern and contemporary architectural heritage and its value in the inland traditional city, and then to proceed adequate protection becomes a practical and pressing issues. With the perspective of the historical culture, this essay analyzes the modern and contemporary architecture from the space-time background of the urban historical culture. First of all, based on the combing the development of the modern and contemporary architecture and the urban historical culture in Xi'an and Taiyuan, the essay points out their evolution features, such as the unitary feature in the period of“import of the western culture”, the binary feature coexisted in the period of“development of the modernization”, the shock of the multiformity in the period of“exploration of the contemporary”, and the top-down path and outside-inside way of the architectural culture evolution.Secondly, based upon the four basic characteristics of the historical culture in Xi'an and Taiyuan which are the contradiction of cultural selection, the stability of the cultural ecology, the primary standard of the traditional culture and the eclecticism of the cultural attitude, this essay analyzes the mutual relationship between the modern and contemporary architecture and the historical culture in those two cities. This relationship is described with the idea of“Inherent pattern and representation”.“Inherent pattern”represents historical culture, which decides and directs the modern and contemporary architecture in terms of evolution, external features, architectural consciousness and conduct.“Representation”represents the modern and contemporary architecture, which bears and displays the historical culture related to the developing venation, inner characters, information and memory.Thirdly, reference the domestic universal values of the modern and contemporary architectural heritage, and combined with the features and cultural connotations of those two typical cities, this essay brings out the multi-dimensional, regional, dynamic and integral values on the modern and contemporary architectural heritage in inland traditional cities. Meanwhile, the multiple value system of the modern and contemporary architecture heritage has been built with the cultural and emotional value as the core, the architectural value as the basic and the utility value as the continuation. Finally, using Taiyuan as an example, the essay proposes the related principles, strategies and methods of the conservation and reuse of the modern and contemporary architecture in inland traditional cities. This essay attends to clarify the relationship between the modern and contemporary architecture and the urban historical culture, and to emphasize the values of the modern and contemporary architectural heritage in the historical culture inheritance. These are all from the perspective of historical culture and stretched by the architectural evolution and its features. The recognition of the modern and contemporary architecture should not be limited within the frame of heritage conservation, but to integrate in more diversified urban structures in order to form a complete and consecutive“chain of urban culture”at the end.
