In recent years, State Grid vigorously promoting the construction of ultra-high voltage (UHV) and Smart Grid, the grid intelligent level is higher and higher. In order to adapt to the demands of the development of electric power system technology, power system secondary equipment continually updated, and the operation of the equipment on time dependent more and more is also high. Various automation equipment are in need of unity, high precision time benchmark, to ensure the accuracy of the real-time running state and other important information, at the same time to facilitate the system fault and failure analysis for precise fault location.1000KV southeast Shanxi - Nanyang - Jingmen UHV alternating current pilot demonstration project is designed and constructed independently by our country, which is the world’s first UHV project getting into commercial operation. Southeast Shanxi 1000KV substation is the starting point and an important part of the demonstration project. So it has important practical significance and engineering application value to study time synchronization technology for this substation.This paper introduces the electric power system time synchronization method and related technologies for substation, and a brief description of the characteristics of different time synchronization options. In view of the characteristics and importance of southeast Shanxi 1000KV substation, the technology requirements for time synchronization is proposed. According to engineering site condition, the time synchronization scheme of southeast Shanxi 1000KV substation is proposed by integrating advanced time synchronization technologies.In this paper, the design of main clock and clock expansion of the southeast Shanxi 1000KV substation time synchronization system is completed, which highlights the advancement of time synchronization technology and the practicability of the time synchronization scheme. With the method of multiple time source input, the GPS signal, the BDS signal and optical IRIG-B code signal access system at the same time. By using high precision constant temperature crystals and the hardware logic, the function of high precision self-timekeeping is realized. To ensure the time synchronization pulse output system stable and reliable, multi-source selection tracking technology is adopted. In addition, the time synchronization management technology is applied so as to realize better monitoring and management of the southeast Shanxi 1000KV substation time synchronization system.This paper tests the performances of time synchronization device developed, including the source input, punctual tracking performance, delay compensation, multiply time source choice, time synchronization management, interface performance test. Test results show that the technical targets meet the design requirements of the southeast Shanxi 1000KV substation time synchronization system.
