The Nanking central hospital is both a representative of Chinese modern hospital and modern hospital architecture design in the 1930s. Its’ modernity’ is shown in two aspects:as a hospital architecture and as a hospital. As a hospital architecture, it has modern architectural style and advanced architectural equipment. As a hospital, it has innovation system, modern medical equipments and excellent medical service. Hospital architecture is not a Chinese native architectural type, and Chinese native hospital architecture design has emerged in 1930s. This artical intends to take away the modernity on the non-architectural aspect, refrain from confining to the architectural style and inspect the modernity of Nanking central hospital in the context of architectural design.Through the arrangement of related literature, establishing an interpretation between the interior and exterior of the architecture, this case study tied to achieve a more comprehensive architectural analysis. First, by looking back upon the complicated historical process of this hospital, pointing out that the Nanking central hospital is not only a single building but also an ambitious program. And the main building designed by Yang Tingbao is the key content of the program. Second, by examing three groups of spatial events and their system pattern, testifying the Nanking central hospital is more than a hospital building, or a hospital, but a symbolic space. Last, by analyzing the spatial symbolism carrier-the main building designed in 1933, revealing the symbolic building exterior and practical interior, and discussing relations between the building’s exterior and interior.The analysis shows that the interior of the building is dominant by practiaclity manifesting as function requirement, technical condition and economic efficiency. And the interior is irrelevant to the exterior. However, some fact that has been ignored shows a consideration of the building’s interior has disaffiliated from the exterior restrain. This case study intends to prove, as a historical building in a certain period, the Nanking central hospital has a appear with a modernity of’form following logic’ The result of the case study intends to bring forth the complexity and specificity of the historical building, and reflect upon the historic research method and thinking stereotype.
