Waterfront, regarded as a city showcase window, is the most viable form of the city. In urban development, waterfront plays a significant part of the urban construction. The quality of urban waterfront landscape contributes to urban structures, ecological environment, and the quality of residential lives. In the context of economic globalization, regional culture, as a branch of national or ethnic cultural framework, continue to be the impact of the global cultural convergence. Under this circumstances, the development and continuation of local culture is important. The city waterfront is a region with geographic, culture and historic value. In other words, it is the heritage of the city. It is not only suitable, but also typical to use the regional culture as the start point to analysis urban waterfront landscape planning issues. Therefore, this paper has significant theoretical and practical value based on regional cultural expression as Guangzhou Shanghengli urban Waterfront landscape plan and design of the study.First of all, this paper defined the landscape, landscape planning, urban waterfront landscape planning and the concept of regional culture with literature review research method. At the same time, this paper summarizes the status of domestic and outside relevant researches, analyzes several Chinese cases related urban waterfront landscape planning, especially for the regional culture. Moreover, this paper talked about recreation theory, critical regionalism, environmental psychology theory, constructive art theory, art aesthetic theories.Secondly, this paper discussed the relationship between the Urban Waterfront Landscape Planning and Regional Culture; proposed the strategy to express urban waterfront landscape planning in local culture from the expression elements, form aspects; summarized the framework of local cultural expressions in urban waterfront landscape planning.Finally, based on the existing home and abroad urban waterfront design theory, domestic and international practice cases in Urban Waterfront Landscape Planning and Design, this paper studied urban waterfront landscape planning and design of cultural expression in Guangzhou Shanghengli. It extracts cultural elements in the natural territory, natural resources, historical heritage, folk arts and crafts; use reservation, emulation, remolding and metaphor as expression forms; use hardscape, such as architecture and plaza, softscape, such as plants and water features as carrier, built up Guangzhou Shanghengli urban waterfront design system. This system explores the background of the city, analyzes the heritage of the site, rethinks the culture of the city, and finally, reconstructs, expresses and redevelops the local culture.Furthermore, taking advantages of rich cultural characters of Guangzhou Shanghengli, keeping the balance between ecological matrix and urban life quality, a continuous, ecological, multi-functional path was built, a sustainable, high quality, multi-layered, organized, multi-functional landscape was created. It reflected the modern urban waterfront city characteristics of the road, the road of cultural, ecological road, to improve the quality of life on Shanghengli city.This paper aims to arouse peoples’ attention to the urban waterfront landscape planning and design of cultural expression, highlight the characteristics of the city. At the same time, it offers an approach based on local culture, ecological restoration, and humans’ physical and psychological needs, in order to promote the development of urban waterfront landscape, cultural and geographical diversity, and the continuity of the city.
