Nowadays, with the rapid development of information technologies, humans are creating massive data every second. While human society heading into era of Big Data, the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry is also experiencing a technical evolution with Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology which is bring the AEC industry into a highly informationized domain. The AEC industry itself is highly data-productive since it is strongly interdisciplinary with a mass of different projects. But because of the low level of informatization, different kinds of data in the lifecycle of projects cannot be well stored and integrated, leading to be separated and lost. As the core technology of the AEC industry informatization, BIM is based on the concept of integrating different sorts of information in the industry. BIM model is the foundation of creating and integrating multidimensional and various kinds of data and makes the accumulation of the Big Data of the AEC industry possible. The AEC industry operates according to its industry standards and several related laws, as well as it is informationized. Comparing to the comprehensive system of BIM standards abroad, China still has not published BIM standard to guide the Chinese AEC industry, which is impeding the development of informatization and the accumulation of the Big Data of the AEC industry.Based on aforementioned research background, this thesis works on the BIM-based primary research on the Big Data of the AEC industry.To start with, this thesis discusses the characteristics of both the Big Data and the data of the AEC industry, considering that the data of the AEC industry accords with the Big Data and could be used to uncover the value of the data by mining.Then, the data standards of BIM are elaborated as the foundation of the informatization of the AEC industry.In addition, the level of data involvement of BIM model elements is discussed and chose, considering that cost and time parameters are needed in the BIM construction model to obtain data.Finally, a practice model of a project is built as the basic BIM construction model in which model elements match the LOD300 and are added with time parameters. The methods of data extraction are discussed and practice is done, considering using BIM construction model to obtain the Big Data of the AEC industry feasible, possessing high research value.
