Three-ring gear reducer was invented by Chinese researchers in the 1980 s. Three-ring gear reducer is characterized by large transmission ratio, strong bearing capacity, small volume, high efficiency, wide applicable scopes and other advantages, but it has not been widely used. Main reason of which is three-ring gear reducer exists the problems in using process. To this end, this paper has carried out research works on the following aspects:The paper has summarized research status and development trend of the three-ring gear reducer at home and abroad. The paper has also provided detailed information on main structure and working principle of three-ring gear reducer at the same time;Design of various basic parameters of internal gear pair in three- ring reducer at the same reduction ratio based on parameters of JLH651 double circular arc gear reducer;3D CAD software and ADAMS software have been employed respectively to create a parameterization model and a virtual prototype for three-ring gear reducer. A curve figure of planetary bearing force and gear meshing force in the time domain have been obtained through simulation experiments. Therefore, boundary conditions of finite element analysis could be determined;Finite element model of gear-coupler restrained by a spring element have been established and analyzed to obtain the time-domain figure of displacement and stress in a cycle of output axis movement. Finite element model of inner- toothed meshing gear has been established to be solved. Displacement and stress distribution situation on inner- toothed plate and external gear have been studied;Regarding design variables as parameters of the main structure of gear-coupler, design optimization has been conducted on the basis of the parametric modeling and finite element analysis, achieving a minimum volume of three-ring gear reducer on the basis of guarantee of structural intensity. Influence of parameter changes of inner toothed structure on maximum stress has also been analyzed during implementation of optimization design.
