Helmet-mounted Sight Display System (HMDs) is a necessary equipment for modern fighters, which has an important significance for enhancing the combat capability of the Air Force. Through HMDs, pilots could quickly battlefield environment to capture and track the off-axis targets, as well as launching weapons. Tasks in modern air combat for pilots will be more diverse, and the amount and complexity of information on the display system interface in the fighter will be higher. This requires that pilots have quick recognition and response capabilities. So, the HMDs interface design is quite important for smooth and efficient completion of pilot flight operations. This researches on HMDs interface information elements coding design based on cognitive ergonomics, human factors engineering and interface design theory, and based on researching literature and research achievement of our group. Encoded content of this paper include symbol coding, color coding and character coding. By using methodologies of questionnaires, subjective evaluation methods, the symbol coding of four target symbol: Boogie, enemy aircraft, wingman and friendly aircraft is designed and researched. Then the transparency is studied and three distinguishing grade of degree are selected, and the four grades of line-width of the four symbols are ordered. In addition, the paper also code and analysis the target locator line on HMDs interface, and find that reflected coding format has higher cognitive performance of reaction time. Finally, through the eye tracker experiment of target symbol of different width and transparency and by comparing the reaction rate and the correct performance indicators, the coding format of higher cognitive performance is decided.
