Architecture is a complex system with multiple attributes, such as materiality and cultural, technicality and artistry, publicity and specialty. In our perception and construction process of architecture, this contradiction often reflects in the phenomenon of presence and absence, which comes from noumenon, bases on skills, confined by concepts, and contained in architecture form. The interpretation can provide a cognitive perspective into architecture. Setting the representation aside, it will allow us to regain sensitivity to form and construction.Basing on the thought of "beginning in review, finishing in introspection", this paper has been launched and related into the study of the phenomenon of presence and absence according to the order of "History retrospection-Causes dissection-Contemporary interpretation". First it confirms the existence of the phenomenon by researching into history and modern architecture. Then in order to have a more clear understanding of the phenomenon, the various deep-seated causes of this phenomenon will be analyzed, from the objective aspects of material and technical, to the variety of conceptual influences of philosophy, ethics, art, psychology, etc. On this basis, starting from the example interpretation in contemporary architecture, we will discriminate the some current trends of thought and practice from the perspective of presence and absence, and ultimately return to the reflection and inspiration of architectural design.
