The construction of smart substation is at its rise stage and expanding rapidly in China. By far, the interoperable manner among the substation devices has revolutionarily changed, as well as the related devices are connected together through optical fibers, which communicate with each other in accordance with IEC 61850 standard.In terms of the power system relay protection course, only with a perfect check and acceptance process, the safety and stability of the operation of the system can be consequently achieved, therefore, the acceptance is a very important work. A few years ago, the construction of smart substation was just a pilot project, however, as the large-scale construction starts, many maintenance staffs are not familiar with the smart substation acceptance method, which leads the work of check and acceptance cannot be quickly and effectively carried out.In this paper, based on years of experience of the power system relay protection and the perceptions of the smart substation, the check and acceptance method of 220kV smart substation busbar protection is then studied. Firstly, the changes of power system relay protection brought by the smart substation are analyzed, further to point out the difficulties of bus protection and acceptance process for the 200kV smart substation. There are communications on all of the spaces between each bus protector and the bus to be protected. These communication processes are no longer implemented by the current and voltage existing in the cable, instead, these courses are accomplished by message communications.Secondly, a check and acceptance method of 220kV smart substation busbar protection is then proposed. This proposed method divides the acceptance and test work into two parts, and based on making a full use of the test work, then focus on the verification work which stands for the key points and the principles easily neglected.Finally, a certain course of the check and acceptance method of 220kV smart substation busbar protection is adopted as an example, in order to apply the proposed method into practice. In the practice stage, the operating method is described in detail which can be taken as a reference for the operation of other substations.
