Engine air filter is one of the most important parts of automobile engine. It can filter dust, soot and smoke which affect the engine life out of the air entering the engine cylinder, expending the engine service life. Most conventional engine air filter is the use of resin-impregnated filter paper as the filter material, its high operating costs, likely to cause pollution to the environment when discarded and in harsh environments unreliable. Basing on the design concept of energy saving innovation, in this paper, using glass fibers and wood fibers as filter material of the air filter, we produce the air filter sample made by wood fiber and reinforced by glass fiber, and test its filtration performance.Firstly, in this paper, we analyzes the development situation of the engine air filter at home and abroad, then introduces the important role of the engine air filter and the market prospects, and illuminates the feasibility of the air filter made by glass fiber and wood fiber. Secondly, in this paper, we commence with the study of filtration theory start from single fiber filtration theory and classic fiber filtration theory, and derives the mathematical expression of the effect of interception, inertia and diffusion of the single fiber, then gets the mathematical expression of the filtration efficiency and filtration resistance of the air filter made by glass filber and wood filber. After that, we analyze the impact that the air filter have on the filtration efficiency and filter resistance of the air filter made by wood fibers and glass fibers using the software of Matlab by the means of controlling variable. Once more, in this paper, we build the three-dimensional model of the air filter using the software of Solidworks, and import the three-dimensional model into the software of Ansys getting on the study of the computational fluid dynamics and getting the situation of the airflow’s pressure and movement in the air filter made by wood fiber and glass fiber. At last, we manufacture the air filter sample made by glass fiber and wood fiber under the guidance of the study of theory and simulation. Then we set up air filter performance testing bench and engine test bench, and get on detection test about all the filters in strict accordance with the relevant standard. The results show that the air filter performance indicators consistent with the theoretical analysis and reach the provision of related standards. Moreover, under the same test conditions, the economy and power performance of the engine that is installed the air filter made by glass fibers and wood fibers have improved than the same engine that is installed filter paper.
