During the nearly 50 years after the Reform and Opening Up, the urban development experienced the transformation from extensive development to intensive and effective development of internal city. As a result, commercial complex came into being. Commercial complex is an urban comprehensive building whose main function is commerce. It gives guidance to commercial activities to a more effective, intensive, sound and healthy development. Commercial complex is a product of the age. With the commercial activities become more and more prosperous, it draws a growing attention of the public.Gender difference is the most fundamental difference of human beings. During the growing up, gender difference is expending in depth by the physical and social factors. In the meantime, nowadays people’s physical demand is met, and people start to pursue spiritual and mental release. User-friendly design has existed in every aspect of our social life. Under this circumstance, gender difference must be taken into consideration in the design, and should be attached greater importance. Many brands have implemented gender differentiation design prior to the commercial building design. Gender differentiation also exists in commercial activities. Besides, during many designs of commercial buildings, gender differentiation in building space has appeared. All above reflects that gender differentiation design of commercial complex is imperative now.The gender differentiation design started late in China. Therefore, the relevant theories are in shortage and the system is not complete. Many problems during the usage of commercial complex were resulted from the lack of theories. In this Paper, the author will provide a theoretical system of building space design based on the gender differentiation of the shopping space in the commercial complex.First of all, in the Introduction, the author explains the background, objective and meaning of this research, and summarizes the current situation of domestic and overseas research. On this basis, the author raises the content and innovation of the research, explains the research methods and theoretical framework of this Paper.This research involves many subjects, and many designs are based on the subjective feelings. Therefore, the research includes both theoretical research and on-site research. In Chapter 2, the author defines, explains and analyzes the relevant theories of the gender differentiation design of shopping space in the commercial complex, which is the theoretical basis of this paper. In Chapter 3, the author streamlines and analyzes the materials in the on-site researches, investigations, visits and questionnaire surveys. The author also summarizes the current situation and problems of the shopping space in the commercial complex, and analyzes the behavior and feelings of people in the shopping space, which is the practical basis of this paper.The objective of this paper is to provide a theoretical system of gender differentiation design of shopping space in the commercial complex. This paper composes of two parts: preliminary stage of design and design methods. The former is explained in Chapter 4, including the design strategies, how to classify the gender differentiation design, how to put the theory into practice. The detailed design methods are in Chapter 5. Detail shopping space design, storefront design details and auxiliary space design method. For each design element put forward specific gender differential design method.At last, research achievement is summarized in Chapter 6. The weakness of this paper is pointed out and the author gives a prospect of the gender differentiation design.
