With the development of our country’s society and economy, the level of city mobility has been continuously improved. In addition, traffic conflicts often occur with the complex traffic flow characteristics of urban road. Traffic conflicts as a quasi accident have some relations with traffic accident and pose a threat to people’s safety. So it is a hot topic in today’s research. In the urban road traffic system which includes people, car, road and environment, drivers as the most important factor and their driving behavior determine the safety of vehicle operation. Like physical field, there is a psychological field around the driver and within this range drivers make different responses and decisions depending on the external environment to ensure the safety of driving. Therefore, it is significant to study the driver’s psychological field in the traffic conflict environment. In this paper, traffic conflicts between motor vehicles were taken as research objects to analyze the psychological field model. Firstly, the basic theory of urban road traffic conflict was studied from the aspects of definition, classification and the influence factors. Then the physical field was proposed and studied from the psychological field.Secondly, the input and output variables of the model were confirmed. The input variables were determined by considering the driver characteristics, traffic volume, the impact strength of the object and the distance between the driver’s safety requirements. The driver characteristics were studied from the driving experience, the stress reaction and the psychological driving force; the intensity of the object was derived from the calculation model of the electric field strength and driver’s safety demand distance was modeled from the view of critical conflict zone. The acceleration was used as the output variable because it could reflect the driver’s psychological stress. Based on the input and output variables, a physical model of the driver’s mental field under traffic conflict environment was constructed by using the stimulus sensitivity framework which proposed by General Motors Corporation. Finally, the Vissim simulation software was used to analyze the psychological field of drivers. Different virtual simulation scenarios were set up according the relationship among variables in the model, then collecting the traffic flow parameters of different scenarios from experiment. The evolution rules of traffic conflict and the classification of the driver’s psychological field intensity were obtained through the analysis of the data.
