Education in China is in the transition period. With country’s increasing emphasis on primary and secondary education, more and more school-age children need to receive education. A lot of hysteresis phenomenon has happened in the development and present situation of primary and secondary schools, such as many schools are unable to adapt to the new educational theory and educational requirements, so, the renewal and expansion of campus is imminent. However, there are short of campus renewal and expansion research about small and medium-sized school in our country in recent years, so that it brings many obstacles in the construction of primary and secondary schools. Guangzhou is a representative city of Lingnan area, its special geographical environment and historical culture make construction of primary and secondary schools with unique regional characteristic. Based on the above background as the research starting point, through the investigation of the status of primary and secondary schools in Guangzhou City, combined with the actual project experience, this article is trying to sort out a more clear design ideas of primary and secondary school’s update and expansion.First, this article summarized the domestic and foreign research status in three aspects:regionalism of architecture, campus planning and construction of primary and middle school as well as building renovation and expansion. Then this article summed up related theory research of small and medium-sized construction, which including regional architecture theory, site design theory, overall theory. Then on this basis, considered primary and middle school that need to update the expansion and has completed the extension in Guangzhou City as the main objects of study. Through ways of data collection, field investigation, case understanding to find and sum up the problems exit in primary and middle school. In addition,analysis the problems and put forward suggestions for improvement.Based on the summary and analysis of the current situation and combined with the relevant theoretical research, this article summed up some design principles and methods apply to the primary and middle school’s extension in Guangzhou city. Content includes five aspects, such as regional design, campus and site integration design, integration of old andnew campus design, design of creative space diversification and detail design. Then make feasible design method that corresponding to the design principles of from macro to micro and from whole to local.Finally, the writer combine the two actual cases she participated in-- renewal and extension of building renovation in Guangzhou Nansha District Lingshan middle school and expansion project in Guangzhou Huadu fifth primary school’s bishop. Applying to the groomed design method to the practice, combining the theory with practice, deepens our understanding of the primary and secondary school campus.
