Environmental problems are becoming more and more concerned by people. With the increasing number of vehicles, a large number of exhaust emissions caused great harm to our environment. Because using Hybrid Electric Vehicle can be a very good solution to this problem, countries around the world are actively doing research in this field to reduce emissions. This paper provides a hybrid city bus solution. A traditional bus is modified to Series Hybrid Electric Bus. According to the characteristics of city working condition, this paper makes a performance target to the hybrid electric bus. In order to achieve this goal, firstly, through the comparative analysis about structure types of Hybrid Electric Vehicle, it select the series structure for the designed power system and complete components selection and parameters matching for this system. For making the engine and battery work in high efficiency area and taking into account the fuel economy and emissions requirements, it determines the integrated control strategy. This strategy using Power Follower Strategy combined with Thermostat Control Strategy. And it complete designing hardware and writing software for HCU(Hybrid Control Unit) to realize this strategy. Then, the integrated control strategy and main vehicle components are modeled in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. Finally, Advisor software is used to made simulation for the designed prototype under certain drive cycle. Compared with the traditional bus, it verified the rationality and superiority of the overall design. This design provides guidance for the development of Hybrid Electric Vehicle, especially for Series Hybrid Electric Bus.
