In the context of rapid urbanization and great development of high-speed rail, high-speed rail station and the surrounding area play an increasingly important role in urban development. According to forefront concept of development, high-speed rail station area is not only a transportation hub space, but also an integration zone with variety functions:transport services, commerce, business, entertainment, exhibition, information services and so on. It is also the gateway region to show image and feature of city. However, high-speed rail station area’s isolation problem made by station building is widespread in China.Firstly, by field research and analysis of Nanjing railway station and Nanjing south railway station, the paper summarized the existence isolation problem in two aspects:spatial segregation and functional isolation. Secondly, from the perspective of station area construction system, four reasons of isolation are proposed:The particularity of the railway branches; Lack of integration in planning system; restriction of land development regulation and absence of cooperation; independent operational management of the railway station. Then, the article put forward a comprehensive proposal to solve the problems:on system level, by learning from foreign experience in railway operations and development, institutional innovation and integration of planning and construction are proposed; on design level, with design experience of the railway HOPSCA, provide a design method to solve the problem of railway station isolation. Lastly, according to suggestions of system and design, finish comprehensive planning of Nanjing North Railway Station area.
