City identity is the impression and feeling of the city presented for people, combining with various factors, including its geographical environment, cultural characteristics, economic levels, etc. In the recent decades of urban progress, the city population size and area have been expanding with astonishing speed. Because of this, a variety of social problems in regard to environment, traffic or dwellings have also followed on the neck of another, which causes much inconvenience and confusion for people’s everyday-life situations. Thus, what kind of "City Memory" people can get and how to create the perfect "City Experience" have become the focal point of the City Identity System (CIS) design.With the development of spiritual needs, advanced technology and media in the contemporary society, the CIS is consisted of three aspects, including the City Mind Identity System (CMIS), City Behavior Identity System (CBIS) and City Vision Identity System (CVIS), endeavoring in building a complete, in-depth City Experience. The research topic is based on concepts of the "CIS" and the "Information Visualization (IV)" as theoretical basis, and systematically discussed from factors of Information Architecture, Design Methods to the effect of theory and practice.Firstly, the factors of Information Architecture are mainly discussed on how to constitute the city identity information, then to analyze different CIS elements which are considered in diverse cities and put forward grouping people by floating population, residents and the disadvantaged. Besides, according to the epochal changes, three design methods—simplification, aestheticization and actualization are proposed. Finally, there are two aspects of the promoting effect on the ways of information transmission and the development of city construction respectively after studying the Information Visualization of CIS.The concepts of "new city", such as Smart City and Digital City, followed as a result of state-of-art technology. The understanding of information no longer stays in the superficial, single and one-sided way, but comprehensive, interactive cognition nowadays. Also, completely the construction of new urban is promoted by the visual image, service system and planning strategy. The new media as a carrier creates a city impression which lives up to the contemporary aesthetic and psychological demands. What is more important is to improve the higher quality of life for general public. If the existing theories and technical conditions could be used effectively, it will plan the city identity reasonably and scientifically.
