The quality of human health has been taken care because of urbanization development, such as environmental degradation, conflicts between human and vehicles, leisure time and other issues. In the mean time, human have a higher demand to their mental and nature due to the improvement of people’s living standards and acceleration of life pace. World Health Organization clearly pointed out the world’s best exercise is walking in 1992. Walking is a basic human activity. Green walking is the most healthy way. But because of the terrain that construction land in mountainous cities is limited, road density and networking is low, but the traffic load is heavy, as a result, people pay little attention to pedestrian traffic construction and even seriously ignore the requirements for the quality of walking trip, problems such as unsafe pedestrian environment, inconvenient pedestrian path, uncomfortable walking trip and uninteresting pedestrian space emerge, and walking trip of residents in mountainous cities are restricted.Based on the study of domestic and overseas theories and practices on green pedestrian system, the paper introduces Recreational Behavior Psychology(RBP) theory, carries out explorative researches on construction principles and methods for mountainous city green pedestrian system combined with the investigation of green pedestrian system in the downtown area of Chongqing City. This research is aimed at providing useful thoughts for planning and design of green pedestrian and theoretical basis for mountainous city green pedestrian system of the same kind. This paper has been divided into four parts. The first part, introduces the relevant concepts, studies domestic and overseas theories and practices on green pedestrian system. The second part, studies theories of Recreational Behavior Psychology(RBP) and green pedestrian system, and makes an investigation of green pedestrian system in the downtown area of Chongqing City, analyzes environment characteristics(natural environment, space environment and cultural environment)of green pedestrian system in the downtown area and psychological features( recreational activities and recreational psychological needs)of residents’ recreational behaviors in the downtown area and summarizes four features of green pedestrian system of mountainous cities: Landscape sights variability, street forms richness, cultural features integration, humanity activities diversification, which offers theoretical basis for construction principles and methods. The third part, based on the above research, construction principles and methods for mountainous city green pedestrian system are raised from the point of planning and design. The fourth part, construction theories are applied to planning and design of green pedestrian system of Jiulongpo core area, “Taoyuanshengjing” green pedestrian system which has been completed and put into operation is investigated through questionnaire survey, and advantages and disadvantages after transformation are proposed to further perfect existing theories. Finally, the principles and methods of constructing urban mountain green pedestrian system are summarized:(1)on the planning level, proposed five principles of wholeness, systematicness, continuity, accessibility and territoriality, defined planning contents of mountainous urban green pedestrian system in terms of method;(2)on the design level, proposed five principles of humanization, adaption to local conditions, natural ecology, activity diversification and contextualism, defined design contents of mountainous urban green pedestrian system from security experience, convenience experience, comfortability experience, interestingness experience in terms of method;(3)on the implementation level, proposed to enhance policy measures and maintain management.
