Structure with energy dissipation devices is widely used in our country due to its good seismic performance nowadays, since the promulgation of occupation standard Technical specification for seismic energy dissipation of buildings(JGJ297-2013), the application of energy dissipation structures will be in a new peak. Viscous damper also become the most common form owing to its clarity in concept, economical efficiency and good seismic mitigation effect.In this paper, we will discusses the common design technique of the structure with energy dissipation devices and its approaches in certain software. Also, the derivation of energy consumed of a nonlinear viscous damper with dip angle by the cycle and equivalent damping ratio is given based on energy principle. A simplified analysis method is presented for the evaluation of structural damping capacity using equivalent total damping ratio. Use floor shear or displacement as the benchmark of shock-absorbing, and based on the principle of energy method, the method of calculating the equivalent damping ratio of energy dissipation structure is applied to the practical design step, and the theory is deduced.Using YJK, Etab and MidasGen structure analysis and design software, a practical design method is used to analyze and design a 12 layer energy dissipation structure with nonlinear viscous dampers. The good performance of the viscous dampers are demonstrated by comparing with no control structure model, and the validity of the method is demonstrated. The estimation formula of the energy consumed by the nonlinear viscous dampers in the horizontal earthquake action and the validity of the equivalent damping ratio calculation method are also tested. And successfully apply it to a multi story building structure in the actual engineering project, and obtain the good effect of shock absorption. Through the analysis of the project, it can be concluded that: The installation angle of the damper has an significant influence on the damping effect of the structure, Therefore, we should try to construct the damping installation form which can enlarge the relative velocity of the two ends. Using the iterative method based on energy method to calculate the equivalent damping ratio can achieve quite satisfactory accuracy. The seismic response of the energy dissipation structure can be tuned by adding viscous damper to each floor, which can avoid weak layer so that the structure performance under earthquake can be more fits in with the engineering concept design. The energy dissipation structure has good seismic performance, and can achieve the "three level" design goal of seismic design. Energy dissipation structure can significantly reduce the floor acceleration to ensure the safety people’s life and property under rarely occurred earthquake.
