The rapid development of our country highway leads to a lot of energy consumption and environment deteriorating rapidly. With the promotion of global sustainable development concept, people are increasingly concerned about the highway construction process energy consumption and environmental impact, the world’s governments, research institutions and enterprises and other organizations have carried out a lot of green and low carbon research and practice. Wherein the life cycle assessment(LCA) method can quantify the energy consumption and environmental evaluation of each link and every stage of road construction, it is important to provide guidance for the green, low-carbon road construction project.This paper conducts a comprehensive analysis about the basic theory and methods of the LCA used in pavement engineering. It summaries and analyzes the main domestic and foreign research about LCA goal and scope definition, inventory analysis, impact assessment of these three main aspects,the analysis believes that the current pavement LCA study has the following problems: no uniform standard scoping; domestic lack of data supporting can’t form a standard database; quality of the data analysis less; impact assessment is not comprehensive and so on. For its problems, the paper puts forward some work suggestions.This article takes one of Beijing urban road maintenance and construction as example and researches the traffic environmental impact produced by the maintenance and construction works. Traffic and vehicle fuel change led by different maintenance project implementation plan and carbon emissions produced by construction work itself these two aspects are analyzed. For the first aspect, the paper evaluates quantitatively the traffic impact of different maintenance project implementation plan based on traffic simulation method, and also analyzes the changes of vehicle resulted by different maintenance project implementation plan. Based on the results, this paper makes the reasonable and scientific construction organization plan optimization and gives the decision-making process and method of urban road maintenance project implementation plan. For the second aspect, the study rationally defines the scope of the evaluation and determines the evaluation object based on the LCA theory of pavement engineering. In addition, based on the investigation and research, it uses the quotas and relevant industry standards as thebasic database to calculate the carbon emissions.LCA software can simplify work in life cycle assessment, rapidly provide environmental assessment basis and optimize the construction plan of pavement engineering. To promote the technology development of the domestic pavement life cycle assessment, this paper takes the pavement LCA software Athena for example, and elaborates the basic theory and application methods of LCA software through practical case study. And combining with the operational characteristics of the domestic road construction, this paper puts forward to form a LCA analysis model suitable for Chinese national conditions through the steps required to pass.
