Belt conveyors have wide applications as material transmission systems in domestic ports nowadays. High-voltage motors with reduction gearbox are usually employed as driven devices. Since motors and driven unit are seriously sealed, vibration and temperature detection are common used method for fault detection. However time-delay will be encountered to hinder the instantaneity and currency at spot. In addition, the designed power is much greater than actual loading power at most time, which will cause serious waste of power and reduce the company’s efficiency. Considering the mentioned observation, this paper investigates the current detection based fault detection and energy saving approaches for belt conveyors.First, basic structures for belt conveyors are presented and basic fundamental knowledge of current detection for high-voltage motors are introduced. Since the proposed methods for belt conveyors system are based on current detection, it analyzes the fault detection and energy saving approaches based on practical systems.Next, fault detection approaches are proposed for belt conveyors system. This paper predicts the potential fault of considered system through current tendency detection and synchronization analysis of each motor. Then, energy saving approaches are proposed for belt conveyors system. For the system whose driven devices are high-voltage motors with reduction gearbox, based on the mathematical relationship model between current and load, motors reduction scheme is proposed. Finally, both software and hardware design scheme are presented for fault detection and energy saving control of belt conveyors system. Besides, simulations and test at spot are presented to verify the effectiveness of proposed approaches.
