Zhuangyuanfang, a block with more than 700 years history, is located in the east of Renmin South Road at Yuexiu District in Guangzhou, and the core is an inner street. Since the beginning of 1990 to set up the arts and crafts market, it gradually developed into a professional street with very special student supplies and craft boutique. But with the rapid structural adjustment and transformation, a series of problems have emerged in the old city of Guangzhou. Zhuangyuanfang block is also faced with a variety of fading. Housing increasingly threatened to break, fire sanitation risk, slow construction of traffic facilities and other issues to be solved. This paper conducts an empirical study on urban morphology of the block by using the urban morphology theory of Conzenian school. And it will put forward the concept of "Morphological basis", which is expected to combine the basic study of the physical morphology with non-physical morphology of the block, in order to explore the characteristics and causes of the morphological evolution and partition the urban morphological regions. It will provide a detailed basis for the further study of urban morphology in the micro level by constructing the system scientific analysis method. This paper will be divided into eight chapters. In the preface, the study will review the related research. It will mainly review the interactive relationship of the urban morphology theory of Conzenian school with the elements of urban morphology, which is providing the support of theory and method for the research of this paper. The second chapter is the concept and connotation of "Morphological basis". The concept of "Morphological basis" is expected to provide a framework for the study with the spatial practice of the physical morphology under the influence of deep structural elements is provided. The third chapter is a brief analysis of the present situation and the morphological factors of the block. It will be discussed with the history of the neighborhoods, socio-economic and spatial aspects of the overall morphology. Chapter four to six will be divided into five periods before and after the founding of the state. And it will make a morphological basic research respectively, in order to explore the morphological characteristics and causes of the block in each period and partition the urban morphological regions. The seventh chapter is based on the analysis of the current situation and the evolution process. It will partition the urban morphological regions and summarize the morphological characteristics. The eighth chapter will do a study on the evolution process and the general rule of the block’s morphological basis. Through analyzing the change regulation of the morphological factors in each period, it will discuss the relationship between the influencing factors with the evolution of the physical morphology and the motivation. This paper is firstly attempting to apply the concept of "Morphological basis" to the study of urban morphology, and it combines physical morphology as the main study with the non-physical morphology, in order to explore the characteristics and motivation of the morphological evolution of the old city block in the time-space dimension. And it will develop an analysis theory of urban morphology in the old city of China by using the morphology partition system based on the plan units. It will be of great significance to guide the renewal of the old city.
