The importance of the development of small towns in Western subzone of Jilin Province has been gradually revealed in the process of accelerating urbanization. However, due to the common influence of various internal and external factors,it is facing severe problems of ecological environment protection and self development. With the continuous expansion of the scale of small towns, the spatial form of towns has also undergone dramatic changes, and gradually showed unsustainability. This study tries to find the regularity of the development of small towns in the process of the evolution of the space form, and deeply explore the linkage relationship between the urban spatial form and the external factors such as society, economy and environment, and the two-way mechanism between the guidance and feedback of the inner elements of the urban space form and the function of land use by means of quantitative analysis. Then propose feasible models and strategies for future development of small towns in Western subzone. In order to solve practical problems effectively, help the rise of small towns and promote the economic development of Jilin province. In this paper, from the perspective of space form, the use of GIS,the theory of space syntax, with space as the main line, taking time as the auxiliary line, makes a quantitative research on urban morphology.Firstly, through combing the development process of Western subzone of small towns, comparison the spatial morphological characteristics of different periods of western subzone small towns, combined with the development of the status quo,to determine Baicheng Town,Da'an Town,Zhenlai Town,Changling Town,Qian'an Town as the typical towns;Secondly, using GIS for exterior space expansion of small towns form space-timeanalysis,through the analysis of the anisotropy and compactness of the data, found the evolution features of small towns external form, combined with the population evolution, evolution of land function analysis of the evolution of spatial gradient,to find out the influence of the evolution of small town form factors and dynamic mechanism;Thirdly, use the spatial syntax to analyze the fractal evolution of the urban functional space, comparing the data of integration degree, road network density, connectivity and selectivity, get the universality and particularity of the evolution of the functional space in the small towns; Finally, aiming at a series of research results, put forward the model construction for the future development of small town form, and put forward feasible countermeasures for the optimization and adjustment of the spatial form. The current situation of small towns in the Western subzone is a common problem faced by many small towns in China.Especially in plain areas, though the superior environmental conditions exist, the economic development is lagging behind. Therefore,to solve the practical problems of the small towns in the Western subzone of Jilin Province, not only opens a new direction for the future development of Jilin Province. It also provides effective reference ideas and methods for solving the problems of other small towns,so as to contribute to the better urbanization process and achieve the goal of common prosperity.
