With the advancement of world urbanization and the rapid growth of the private vehicles, urban traffic congestion, energy consumption, traffic accidents and haze weather frequently happen. Traffic has become the key factor restricting the economic development of many cities. In order to improve the core competition of public transport, developing more efficient transport system, and discussing how to fully tap the potential service ability of urban traffic network in the limited road resources, make it can not only alleviate the existing contradictions, can also adapt to and guide the passenger demand in the long-term, become the urgent matter. With the advantages of high efficiency, high elasticity, low cost and short construction period, BRT(Bus Rapid Transit) system arises at the historic moment, and has been getting considerable attention by the metropolitan cities in the world.Firstly, the exterior conditions for BRT operations, such as road conditions and traffic conditions. Then BRT’s transport capacity is studied, as well as the corridor characteristics, and further discusses the adaptability and application scope of BRT in our country. In the view of interactive growing relationship between urban morphology and urban traffic network morphology, this dissertation has clarified the idea of layout planning of transit skeleton network, and the BRT’s network scale is determined.Lastly, the planning methods of rapid transportation are studied with the application analysis of Wuhan city, which are significanct for the layout planning of BRT, and provide a theoretical basis for the revision of urban planning.
