To protect bridges against earthquake and wind, it is necessary to introduce the shock absorption and isolation device to enhance the seismic ability of the structure. Due to the viscous damper has great advantages in safety, good effects and low cost, it is widely used in department of civil engineerings.The research aims at studying the fluid viscous damper, which is usually installed between the deck of the bridge and the supporting piers. The paper has analyses the working characteristics of the fluid viscous damper. When the bridge vibrates violently,the piston of the fluid viscous damper will move with the structure. The consumption of energy can be realized by whole shrink energy consumption and viscous energy consumption when the viscous medium flows through holes. According to the knowledge of fluid dynamic theories and fluid viscous damper’s special structure and energy dissipation principle, damping force formulation is made out. Then, a Fluid Viscous Damper is designed, and numerical simulation is made based on the formulation.Apply UG software to establish three-dimensional model of fluid viscous damper which have been designed before. Firstly, build a model in GAMBIT and put the model which is an accurate model on fluid of the Fluid Viscous Damper. Then, transfer the model into FLUENT and analyze it by the method applied on CFD. Get the CFD simulation results that nephogram of pressure and damping force in different piston speed.Apply the MATLAB toolbox to optimize the structural parameters fluid of fluid viscous dampers, then optimization solutions is obtained of the fluid viscous damper. Finally, do an experiment of designed fluid viscous damper. To compare between experiment measured maximum damping force and the CFD simulation maximum damping force,Results show that the CFD simulation can be used to predict the maximum damping force and pressure, which provides certain guides for the practical engineering application and improve the engineering properties of fluid viscous dampers.
