As a country with large population, China has the prominently potential advantages of human capital. How to transform the advantages effectively, thereby improving the overall level of human capital and providing sustained power for the ascension of the capability of independent innovation, is a matter of breaking through the bottleneck of economic development and keeping the economy develop healthily. In order to providing a basic support of theory and research idea for the following study, this paper summarizes the research frame and the latest progress of human capital through introducing its concept, classification, accounting, spillover and relationship with economic growth. Besides, regional development difference also comes from the changing of human capital, economic growth and the internal influence between them. In other words, the coordinative development between human capital and economic growth represents a high level of regional developmental quality. By constructing a coupling theory model, this paper measures the development level and coupling value of the system both human capital and economic development during1982and2011, and discusses about the patterns of coupling transition on the basis of theory of Appropriateness. And then, considering the characteristics of geographically spatial dependence or spatial correlation, this paper employs ESDA method and spatial Lucas model to explore the spatial distribution pattern and associative characteristics of human capital and to analyze the spatial spillover effect of human capital, respectively, thus making a comprehensive picture of China’s regional development difference. The results show that the level of coupling value is low and decreasing from East to West. And there does exist the trend of coupling convergence among regions. It is worth mentioning that this paper discusses about the patterns of coupling transition by drawing on the theory of Appropriateness, thinking that the east and northeast should pay more attention to the capability of independent innovation of human capital, while the central and western regions should focus on the ability to mimic and absorb advanced technology. In addition, the analysis of ESDA and spatial Lucas model shows that there exist significantly positive spatial spillover effects in the majority of our provinces over the past30years, therefore China, in a critical period of economic transformation, should break further the market and system barriers about the spatial spillover of human capital, strengthen regional cooperation on education, medical and health system and realize the rational allocation and flow of regional resources on education and medicine and health.
