Study On The Temporal And Spatial Evolution Of The Built - Up Area Of ​​Taiyuan City In

Spatial expansion within urban is a major research field of land use change, and related to the key issue of the process and orientation of urbanization. This paper combined GIS and conventional statistical methods to study the spatial distribution of Taiyuan city expansion and its dynamic changes over the past one hundred years (1911-2011), analyzed the quantitative rule and related factors of urban expansion process, and clarified the important role of regional planning as policy support in urban development. The main results are listed as follows:(1) The scale of Taiyuan City had expanded from9.8km2to354.53km2during1911-2011, with net increase of344.73km2, and the expansion was well fit for exponential model. Our results also revealed that the average increasing rate of Taiyuan City expansion was3.45km2yr-1, and the increasing rate was characterized by a continuous increase except the period of1959-1970. This is in consistent with the common trend of urban expansion.(2) Dynamic analysis of urban spatial expansion suggested that spatial dynamics of Taiyuan from1911to2011showed fluctuated changes at the different periods. Spatial dynamics increased in1911-1959, but decreased in1959-1970. Fortunately, it have been turned to a continuous increase form1970, especially in2008-2011the expansion rate had been reached to a summit of12.01%.(3) Spatial extension of Taiyuan City showed obvious characteristics based on its morphological perspective. During1911-1949,urban space expansion was Old-Town-centered, and developed toward north and south directions. The key components of urban spatial moved to north slightly, with a small scale and short distance. During1949-1982, urban spatial expansion developed rapidly, and Hexi District had grown gradually into a large-scale. Thus early embryo have been developed, and the key components of urban spatial shifted toward south. During1982-2011, Hedong and Hexi were combined on the basis of the spatial extension of Taiyuan City in1982, and further expansion was carried out rapidly toward south, west and north directions. Spatial gravity shifted to south and west with a large distance. In general, urban spatial of Taiyuan showed a continuous expansion, mainly in three directions including south, west and north. Spatial expansion in each direction indicated a imbalanced development due to several social and political factors in different periods.(4) Urban spatial expansion was affected by many factors. In these cases policy was considered as fundamental power driving urban spatial expansion, reflecting the intension of policy deciders and characteristics of the times. Economic factors were guided by government policy, and made counteraction on urban construction including roads, urban infrastructure construction. These finally improved people’s living standard.
