With the development of science and technology, the hi-tech industries has witnessed a rapid growth, among which the bio-engineering and pharmaceutical industry has become the most rapid one. China has a large population, with the general improvement of living conditions and its ever-changing consumption structure of medicine, the status of biological economy in the national economy is upgrading continuously and receiving a considerate attention. Thanks to the superior and unique natural environment and rich sources of Chinese herbal medicine in Yunnan province, the Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government has duly put forward a strategic vision of constructing the bio-engineering and pharmaceutical industry as the pillar industry to lead the local economic development.This needs more attention being put on the leading role of the bio-engineering and pharmaceutical industry, more energy being used in exploring its potentialities.Through the intensive study, its development trends and basic information will be gained and thus problems will be found and solved. The study of the competitiveness of Yunnan’s bio-engineering and pharmaceutical industry has positive effects for the further speed-up of the local bio-engineering and pharmaceutical industry development.Based on an abundant of literature, documents and relevant books, the thesis has a review and summary of the research progress and results of industrial competitiveness abroad and at home. With the clarification of connotation and extension of industrial competitiveness and the features of bio-engineering and pharmaceutical industry, the research framework for the bio-engineering and pharmaceutical industry’s competitiveness has been proposed under the practical situation of Yunnan, which takes features affecting industrial competitiveness as the breakthrough point.Due to the complex and variety of factors that affecting industrial competitiveness, this thesis combined the Portor’s diamond model and Jin Bei’s competitiveness analysis paradigm. It took industrial clustering ability, hi-tech innovation capacity, market development capability and environment support capability as four influencing factors and among which the hi-tech innovation capacity as the most influential one. This thesis integrated both qualitative and quantitative approaches and applied location quotient and DEA method to study. It first calculated the location quotient of the bio-engineering and pharmaceutical industry of Yunnan in order to measure its agglomeration. Then, it constructed the DEA model based on relevant theories and obtained the combined efficiency,technical efficiency and scale merit of innovation competitiveness of bio-engineering and pharmaceutical industry in Yunnan; third, it analyzed the market development capability of medicine industry in Yunnan from perspective of market performance and market occupancy. Fourth, it analyzed its environment support capability from perspective of resources, macroeconomic fundamentals and industrial power. Last, it proposed some suggestions and strategies targeted to the improvement of bio-engineering and pharmaceutical industry’s competitiveness of Yunnan.
