Discrete manufacturing is an important part of a country’s economic. Comparing with flow manufacturing, discrete manufacturing is more complicated, and piece of small batch production mode makes the development and application of the Manufacturing Execution System more difficult. In order to improve the quality of products, shorten the production cycle, enhance management to adapt to the complex and changeable production environment. Carrying out research about discrete Manufacturing Execution System and developing a system adapt to the production mode is necessary.First, the theory research and application status of the MES was analyzed at home and abroad, and the shortcomings were pointed out. On the basis of the current situation of domestic military discrete manufacturing, a detailed design of the MES’s needs, function and business process were made.Second, task assignment’s component, such as function model, data flow and so on, was detailed designed at the beginning. Then according to the characteristics of production planning and scheduling, a shop scheduling based on genetic algorithm was designed which is accordance with company’s requirement, and it was confirmed feasibly by an actual calculation.Third, the bottleneck of the underlying control system’s development was pointed out, and in order to connect it with MES effectively, the essential conditions to run the on-line trigger and process monitoring were analyzed in detail. We also designed the function model and data flow of this part.Finally, on the basis of the key technologies research and some design philosophies, enabling technologies such as Oracle and Java were used to develop a MES which is advantageous to discrete manufacturing industry. Through the actual verification, the MES was proved to be useful.
