Biochar is a new research hot spot in recent years, in order to explore the effects of biochar addition on growth characteristics of Flue-cured in western Henan. Three experiments were conducted to identify the optimal amount of biochar, the effects of biochar and several common soil conditioner, the different ratio of fertilizer with biochar.A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of biochar addition on growth and photosynthetic characteristics of flue-cured tobacco in hilly arid area of western Henan. Results showed that biochar addition increased soil water content of rhizosphere, enhanced both root activity and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonization rate, improved photosynthetic performance and root-shoot ratio, and promoted tobacco growth in middle and later stage compared with conventional treatment. Biochar addition could also strengthen disease-resistant ability of tobacco, enhanced the yield and grade of tobacco, improved the coordination of the chemical components of cured leaf. From the amount of biochar application, the high amount of biochar treatment on soil water retention properties was optimal, and medium amount of biochar treatment was more advantageous to growth and development of tobacco.After biochar and several common soil conditioner applied into the soil, the results showed that, applying these conditioner helped tobacco biological character, biochar and biological bacterium agent had a good effect on the blade and soil enzyme activity, improved superior rate of tobacco leaf and chemical indexes of tobacco, compared with the several common soil conditioner, biochar had great advantages in improving soil environment, promoting tobacco growth and development, improving the quality of roast tobacco leaf. The test of reducing fertilizer applying and add biochar showed that, it did not cause significant adverse effects on plant height, maximum leaf area, leaf number, stem circumference to tobacco; Adding biochar could effectively promote the chlorophyll and carotenoid content, to a certain extent, increased photosynthetic rate. When fertilizer applied in between80%and100%, blade related enzyme activity was higher, and effectively improved the soil enzyme activity related. It also had certain degree of promotion effect on the content of protein and reducing sugar. Comprehensive indicators, reducing fertilizer applied into20%and adding biochar can more promote tobacco growth in various aspects.In general, the amount of biochar application with600kg·hm-2is the best benefit for tobacco cultivation in west Henan. Compared with the common soil amendments, biochar has obvious advantage, field production is appropriate on the basis of adding biochar to reduce15%-20%of fertilizer inputs.
