The ancient Platycladus orientalis community is not only the precious historical andcultural heritage of China, but also playing an important role in improving the ecologicalenvironment of the Mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor, preventing soil erosion, improving thelandscape efficiency. As the ancient P. orientalis’s physiological function slowed down for itsold ages, and the habitat damaged and soil compacted for the increasing number of touristsand deteriorating environment, the ancient P. orientalis were increasingly weak, some of themon the verge of death in recent years, which threatened the security of the ancient P. orientaliscommunity. So it’s an imminent work to protect the ancient P. orientalis. Therefore, this paperbased on the investigation of the present situations and focused on the health assessment andthe protection and rejuvenation technology of the ancient P. orientalis, with the purpose toapply the basic data for the ancient P. orientalis sustainable protection in the Mausoleum ofthe Yellow Emperor and nearby cities. The main researches were as follows:(1) Research on the history and culture of the ancient P. orientalis Based onconsulting a lot of documents and the local people, the historial and culturial values of theancient P. orientalis in the Mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor were found, which were interms of the cultivation history and culture of the P. orientalis, the formation history andculture of the ancient P. orientalis community. This can help to rebuild the culture of theMausoleum of the Yellow Emperor.(2) Investigation on the natural regeneration Through an open space survey of thenatural regeneration density and related environment factors of the ancient P. orientalis, wefound that the natural regeneration was scattered in this forest with low density, and therewere only one-year-old seedlings, but no young trees. By using the grey correlation analysismethod analyze the correlation between the natural regeneration density and the9relatedaffecting factors in terms of environment, we found that the correlation degrees of the9factors which were associated with the natural regeneration of ancient P. orientalis ranked asfollows: disturbance intensity>crown density>litter layer depth>position>gradient>slopeaspect>litter coverage>shrub and grass coverage>altitude, which meaned the disturbanceintensity, the crown density and the litter layer depth had the biggest influence on the natural regeneration. Meanwhile, according to the results, gave out three management suggestions toimprove the natural regeneration of the ancient P. orientalis.(3) Health assessment of individual ancient P. orientalis Based on an open spacesurvey and opinions of experts, health of the19ancient P. orientalis trees was assessed.Thirteen evaluation indicators in terms of trunk, crown, and root, including stem gradient, bark integrity, trunk injury, and trunk pest were chosen by using the Delphi-analytic hierarchyprocess (AHP) to determine relative indicator weights. Finally, a model for assessing ancientP. orientalis health was established and its health was divided into4grades. Results indicatedthree degrees of vigor:2trees being healthy,9trees being sub-healthy, and8trees unhealthywith most of the trees being sub-unhealthy. The final scores symbolizing the health of theancient trees were matched to the results of the open space survey with the main influences ontree health determined as dieback, pests and diseases, trunk injury, poor soil conditions, andinterference, which can help to make the protection plan.(4) Health assessment of the ancient P. orientalis forest According to the open spacesurvey and the forest ecosystem health evaluation theory, chose13indicators in terms of theforest vitality, forest structure and forest stability, to evaluate the health of the ancient P.orientalis forest comprehensively. It extracted5main components from the13indicators withthe principal component analysis method, and calculated out the comprehensive health index. Finally, with the cluster analysis method, the health of the ancient P. orientalis forest wasdivided into4grades, which provided a theoretical basis for the sustainable and reasonablemanagement of the ancient P. orientalis forest.(5) Ancient P. orientalis protection and rejuvenation On the basis of the ancient P.Orientalis’ survival status quo investigation, analyzed the main factors which made the treesweak. And according to different types of weakness, to make and adjust the protection andrejuvenation plans. This paper summarized the harm characteristics of the diseases and pestsof the ancient P. orientalis, and the physical, biological and chemical methods for the diseasesand pests control. Meanwhile, this research improved the site conditions by controlling thediseases and pests, improving the soil conditions, adding organic fertilizer, diggingrejuvenating channel. In the end, the regrowth of the roots and leaves, so as to therejuvenation of the ancient P. orientalis and increased their life span. At the same time, thisstudy provide a scientific reference for the protection and rejuvenation of the ancient P.orientalis, which are both in the Mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor and the nearby cities.
