It described the domestic and abroad current technology situation and development trend of universal combine. In view of the problems of domestic combine harvester, it analyzed the necessity of domestic universal combine harvester R & D based on agricultural production characteristics in China. It also explained the main technical features that suitable for our country and proposed strategy of universal combine R & D. On the purpose of high-performance and general-purpose chassis of combines connect different separate header quickly to meet the needs of a variety of crops harvested and improve the utilization of combine harvesters, separate header and modular interface of chassis and separate header in universal combine was study designed. To save human, financial and material resources invested in the replacement of separate header and to ensure header mount quickly and reliably, modular interface of header and chassis of combine was designed. A universal combine harvester composed by a chassis and a variety of headers was built basis of complete of modular design of chassis and combine headers and standardized interfaces. Universal-modular interface provides not only a platform for the universal combine harvesters, but also a carrier for more advanced technologies applications on combine, and it’s in line with the development trend of combine harvesters in the world.By compared of traditional domestic combines and foreign header-interchangeable universal combines, it analyzed the operation parameters of auger, cutter and reel of domestic combines for the example of rice-wheat combines. A separate header hydraulic drive system was designed according to parameters of combines. Auger, reel and cutter were driven by hydraulic motors and a plurality of flow control valves parameters for each drive motor units and implementing agencies independently. It’s convenient to connect and disconnect the power transmission between the header and the chassis because the use of hydraulic interface. And Starlight brand combine harvesters, for example, the hydraulic system design of separate header was studied for configuration program, selection of hydraulic components, determine the main parameters of the hydraulic system and check the hydraulic system performance. And provide important reference value for hydraulic system of separate header of universal combine in China.According to the model of the hydraulic system in separate header which was built in AMESim software, speed characteristics, torque characteristics and power characteristics of each actuator in header was emulated. According to the results of simulation, we can get the result that the hydraulic system not only to meet the requirements of design, but also adapt to meet the requirements of kinematics and dynamics of combine in field harvest operations. It is able to get the constant system flow rate, drive power independent of load and steady speed of the drive motors when the parameters of control valve unchanged. Speed of motors can be changed by adjust the control valve parameters, and it can achieve a reasonable speed range. It also meet the requirements of fast, efficient and low-loss harvester harvesting.In this paper, I researched and designed guiding mechanism, support institutions and articulated safety lock mechanism in modular interface of combines under the demand of simple in structure, easy to operate and improve optimization. Each agency of modular interface was designed and assembled in the three-dimensional software to ensure the successful completion of installation. According to the functions and role of the header, I improved and optimized the divider unit, grilled spiral conveyor means, reel, cutting equipment and the table of header for the example of Starlight combine harvester. And a complete separate header for rice and wheat was assembled by combine hydraulic system with the modular interface.A universal combine harvester was built with chassis, header and standardized interfaces. I completed the manufacture of prototype, the test of installation speed between headers and chassis and running test of hydraulic driven system in separate header. We can get the result from installation test that installation of separate header is convenient, fast and reliable, and it can articulate time by 90% compared with ordinary header. Running test of hydraulic driven system shown that speed of Auger, reel and cutter meet the design requirements, and it has the advantages of easy speed adjustment and anti- overload driving ability. Easy adjustment of the parameters provides convenient conditions for combine to meet different crops to establish the best combination of operating parameters.The research of the paper explored the technical methods of combine development which need to meet the requirements of actual production and trends under the condition of multiple cropping and crop rotation system in China. It provided a reference for R & D of universal combine.
