Macleaya cordata (Willd.) R. Br. is a kind of perennial herb which belongs to the genus of Papaveraceae family. The researches have demonstrated in the benzylisoquinoline alkaloids extracted from Macleaya spp., which included sanguinarine (SAN), chelerythrine (CHE), protopine (PRO), and allocryptopine (ALL). Pharmaceutical researches showed that Macleaya cordata alkaloid extracts have bio-activities. Recently, it was found that SAN and CHE had antiseptic and antitumor activities. Macleaya cordata not only has a good development prospect in the field of human medicine, but also get new developments in the field of agriculture. It can be the replacement feeding with antibiotics and the development of biological pesticide, etc.The external morphological, developmental anatomy, plant alkaloids chemical staining and autofluorescence of Macleaya cordata were studied in this article. It was obtained some valuable results, which was filled the gaps in the field of Macleaya cordata and provided the basis of cell biology. The main research results are as follows:(1) Systematic study of Macleaya cordata plant external morphological structures and expounds at different growth periods.(2) Our results demonstrate that the development of Macleaya cordata is similar to typical dicotyledonous plants. Vascular cylinder of root was endarch polyarch haplostele; the numbers of stem vascular bundles were increased during development without formation of periderm; leaves were bifacial, which trichomes and stomata were only found in lower epidermis. In addition, orange spots, which were putative accumulation in cells, often been found in the cortex and near vascular bundles.(3) The alkaloid accumulation normally occurred in parenchymal cells and cellsaround the vessel of stele of roots, the cells nearby the vascular bundles of stems and petioles, occasionally in the pith of stems. The distributiones of alkaloids were different expressed during different periods of organs, but mostly the location was concentrated in the xylem and phloem parenchyma cells and the parenchymal cells.(4) The alkaloid content changes were more obvious at different organs of Macleaya cordata seedling. The contents of alkaloids in root and hypocotyl were continues to increased, but was decreased in the other organs. PRO and ALL contents were always higher than CHE and SAN,during different times at different organs,...
