Deer antler is a traditional Chinese medicine named the “king of animal medicine” and was firstly found and used in clinical medicine in China around the world. Otherwise, deer antler has become an excellent biomedical model based on its unique feature. Feasible sampling methods for antler research will play basic and decisive roles in promoting the development of antler in biomedical research. In addition, the regrowth antler is a by-product in deer production. In this study, the weight of regrowth antlers were significantly improved by treatment of anti-androgen hormones, and it has important implications in increasing output values of deer productions.1. Tissue sampling for antler researchIn this study, we used Chinese Sika deers as experimental materials, we performed tissue collection surgeries for periosteums, growing antler tips and bone tissues, and tissue culture for antler research in vitro. We experimented donor transplantation of antlerorgenic periosteum(AP) tissue and transfered of exogenous genes to AP tissues. The study results show that: AP, pedicle periosteum(PP) and facial periosteum(FP) tissues can be peeled off by rat-toothed forceps. The growing antler tip can divide into five layers. Bone density distinguish can be observe clearly by X-ray. We have succeed in culture of the tissues in vitro, transplantation of AP tissue in donor deer and nude mouse, and transfer of exogenous genes to AP tissue.2. Weight improvement for regrowth antlers by using of anti-androgen hormonesIn this study, four types of anti-androgen hormones including flutamide(group 1), casodex(group 2), cyproterone acetate(group 3) and melengestrol acetate(group 4) were performed in Sika deer. Compared with the control(treat with adjuvant, group 5), the weight of regrowth antler are significantly increased by treatments of four anti-androgens. The statistical results show that: 1.aspects of weight improvement: the weight of regrowth antler of each groups are significantly increased by 67.97%,46.09%,107.03 and 90.63%(p<0.01),respectively, compared to the control. 2. relationship between testosterone levels and regrowth antler weight: when the regrowth antler was cut off, the significant increment weight of regrowth antlers appears in a mid-level testosterone by a content of 10 to 25 nM.
