Research Of The Flower Border Based On The Domestic And Foreign Research Situation, Hanezhou As The Case

Today the flower border is highly regarded in China with its characters which is full of varied and colorful plants, seasonal views, for the reason that we emphasize the pursuit of natural ecological garden construction philosophy, landscape diversity and sustainable development.The flower border can be a widely application in landeape as an artificial form to express our philosophy of reproduce the nature. More attention has been paid to explore and create scientific and rational design methods of flower borders, and the proper approach toward it is a very important and worthy of study.Flower border which originated in England has been well received attention after a century of development which has promoted this form to become a natural, beautiful application form of flowers in landscape abroad.However, its design skill and level still remain unsatisfactory because it is just in its initial stage of application after 10-years’exploration in China and at the present stage, the economica advantage of flower border isn’t shown. The study of flower borders has shown great theoretical significance and practical application value on environment beautification promotion, complementary to rich the plant landscape theory with the continuous development of landscaping ideas and technology. Therefore, this paper focused on the study of flower borders, including theory of border designing and the selection of border plants abroad, and the survey of border application and border plants in Hangzhou, aimed at showing ideas of border design,sununaring methods of border design,especially on combination theory of borders,promoting better use of flower borders in China.The main results of this paper are as follows:(1) Firstly, by analyzing the literature research of the flower border home and abroad, the paper proposed the systematic study including the content of plant material selection criteria, color, scale ratio, seasonal design, maintenance and other aspects of design theory. With the reference of the theory mentioned above, the more practical and suitable design methods have been highlighted, such as combining research methods theory with practice and making garden designers, landscape designers, horticulturists to get involved in the research of flower border.(2) Secondly, results of the survey are given for more than 30 flower borders in scenic areas, urban green space and courtyard flower border cases in Hangzhou during 2014-2015, through field investigation and analysis. And the current existing problems in the Jiangnan region are summarized, such as parterre-style border designing, lacking of plant material in the vertical type and broadleaf type, limited border scale, neglecting interactive relationship between borders and visitors and so on. Also, the common design style currently are summarized as mixed borders.(3) Thirdly,310 species (including varieties) are given, used in flower border of Hangzhou, according to the investigation. What’s more, comparing the results of the surveys a decade ago, analysis of the plant species used in flower borders in Hangzhou was given in this paper, while 151 kinds of new species and 159 recurring included. Also, the paper discussed the main trend of current plant choosing including attention on using gold leaf plants, ornamental grasses, horticultural varieties, shrubs, the vertical-line plants and other broadleaf plants. Contrasting with common plant material used in foreign flower borders, the paper proposed that the herbaceous plant species selection need to be strengthened especially long flowering type, also the vertical lines, broad-leaved plants and wild native plant resources should be paid more attention to avoid the overuse of the wood.(4) Fourthly, analysis of proper practice and applicability in domestic flower border is given in this paper. The paper sununarized designing methods of flower borders from aspects on scale, vertical design, color design. Meanwhile, the spatial layout and plant landscape methods of different situations of flower borders had been elaborated in detail. The paper proposed that more attention should be draw to the effect of the plant populations’ performance, use clumps of herbaceous plant to show the effect on the color space echo, use more other design methods like using herbs instead of shrubs to enrich the facade level performance.(5) Fifthly, practice of flower borders in Qingshan Lake and a garden in Shanghai are given in this paper. With the efforts to summarize the relevant theoretical knowledge combined pattern flower border for application, the author tried to apply the knowledge in order to test and improve the theory of the designing methods of flower border, as the opportunities to make combinations designing. Designing methods of plants combinaiton in different situation were surmmarized based on research of flower border examples abroard and case study on flower borders in Hangzhou.
