The ancient and famous trees of oriental arborvitae is an important scenic landscape in the tomb of Yellow Emperor, the trees ridden the storm still emit light of life, it is a beautiful landscape, and it is Chinese most precious historical and cultural heritage. However, in recent years due to oriental arborvitae growth potential recession, as well as changes in the environment, an increasing number of tourists caused more human disturbance, so oriental arborvitae growth in poor condition, vigor recession, and some have even died. At present more content related research tomb oriental arborvitae, but never conducted a comprehensive non-destructive testing. With the wide application of tree radar unit(TRU) technology, this study aims to use this technology for the first time nineteen oriental arborvitae trunks and roots for testing survey in the XuanYuan Temple, from the shape characterization difficult to observe specific trunk decay level, and the use of non-destructive TRU technology will not cause any negative impact on the trees, the measured data for the second batch of habitat restoration and rejuvenation of old trees provide data to support the construction process in order to avoid damage to the root system, as well as the initial repair decayed trunks were protected. We use tree radar unit(TRU) technology to examine the trunk decay and root distribution characteristics of oriental arborvitae in the tomb of Yellow Emperor.1、The nineteen trees all have different degrees of hollow, the No. of 1,4,7,16,17 extent relatively high hollow, and have a tendency to develop more severe hollow; No.3,5,8,18 of mild hollow. Thick roots in the soil of vertical direction 0-60 cm high density, thick root level distribution in the range of 4 m for the center with trunk density is higher.2、Comparing the distribution of thick roots, we found that oriental arborvitae growing health status related with the health of thick root, in horizontal direction the distribution of thick roots health and sub-health is greater than unhealthy, and in the vertical hierarchy thick roots density is descending in order of healthy> sub-health> unhealthy. Human stampede area compared to those without stampede showed that, the thick roots density of the area without stampede is greater than the area with human stampede, human stampede seriously affect root growth. After root rejuvenation, the thick roots density is greater, and in horizontal had a relatively wider range and distribution, rejuvenation can effectively promote increased root density.3、The nineteen trees all have varying degrees of inclined, tree trunk rot and hollow will exacerbate the tree inclined. Tree inclined has a direct relationship with tree crown uneven stress, hollow trunk exacerbating will lead to tree crown growth unevenly, but the crown uneven growth or tree inclined is caused by many factors, if only by the tree crown uneven growth or tree inclined to estimate whether there is trunk hollow or which side is hollow more serious is unscientific. Use tree radar to detect trunk hollow is necessary, early discovery the trees hollow, and strengthening support well in advance to prevent the tree inclined intensifying.4、After trees radar detection root density of ancient oriental arborvitae in all directions, found inclined crown and root density in each direction may be relevant, the direction of crown grow vigorous relatively high root density. But the direction of trunk hollow with root density distribution found no correlation. The use of ground penetrating radar technology to the old trees in voids and coarse root detection, is a non-destructive, rapid means of detection, the technology is worth more in-depth study and application. Although a lot of work to be done to improve the quality of the information obtained, but with increasing radar digital signal processing hardware and software technologies, it is undeniable, ground penetrating radar in non-destructive testing of plant roots will have a great party potential, with the development of radar technology and image processing technology, the future is expected to study ancient and famous trees used in high-resolution, high-precision ground-penetrating radar.
