On the one hand, China’s forest resource is scarce and forest tending projects are more and more strongly supported by State and local government. However, European and American harvester heads are not suitable for China’s tending felling and domestic tending felling tools of China are basic and inefficient. On the other hand, over the past 30 years, the achievements in the development of China’s intellectual property rights are excellence and China has become the world’s largest producer of intellectual property rights. However, there are a few patents about forest tending harvester head. Academic researchers are lack of the ability of patent mining, failing to accurately grasp innovations. Study on the design of mechanical field stops the moment they finish the mechanical design, lack of research achievements of patent mining. All in all, it’s highly important to design and mine a multifunctional forest tending harvester head which is suitable for our country.Main research contents:(1) Design the overall structure, performance characteristics and functional principle of multifunctional forest tending harvester head. Determine the parameters of felled trees, according to the investigation of the forest region. Design the main structure and the parameters of the whole machine by the general design process and the analogue method. (2) Firstly according to the parameters of multifunctional forest tending harvester head, build part models by using Pro/Engineer Wildfire 5.0. Then assemble the part models into a virtual prototype. Finally, render the virtual prototype by using KeyShot. (3) Draw a conclusion by analyzing velocity, acceleration of the main parts of multifunctional forest tending harvester head, and calculate motion parameters, including variation of the swing angle, range of movement. (4) Derive the formulas of tetrahedron element of U-shaped frame, such as displacement function, strain and stress function, stiffness matrix equation, equivalent node force function. In order to check the strength and stiffness of U-shaped frame, acquire stress and displacement nephograms based on structure static analysis. (5) After mining multifunctional forest tending harvester head by means of discovering innovation, abtain contents and patent documents of the feed roller, the auxiliary clamping device, the drive link.The results showed that:(1) The structure of multifunctional forest tending harvester head meets the design requirements. (2) The virtual prototype has the reality of the physical prototype, equipped with conditions of motion analysis; product renderings can express design concepts and achieve the requirements of photograph output. (3) The working condition, the range of swing angle and the activity space of multifunctional forest tending harvester head can achieve the desired function, and the simulation result verifies the feasibility of tending felling. (4) Tetrahedron element of U-shaped frame is a reasonable finite element; the maximum stress of U-shaped frame is 132 MPa, which is smaller than strength 161.4 MPa; the maximum displacement of U shaped frame is only 0.959mm, which is close to 0. In summary, U-shaped frame meets requirements of strength and rigidity. (5) After patent mining, in order to improve the holding, feeding stability, the contact area between the feed rollers and felled trees could be increased and buffer could be added. This innovation is granted patent rights (Patent No: ZL201420178943.9). In order to process more than one small DBH class trees in one operating cycle, the auxiliary clamping device could be equipped with joint grabs. This innovation is also granted patent rights (Patent No:ZL201420732599.3). In order to improve its strength and wear resistance, the drive link could be fused with the hard metal components. This innovation is also granted patent rights (Patent No:ZL201520201508.8).
