Background: MEC is a most common malignancy affecting the major and minorsalivary gland. The purpose of our study was to determine the clinical characteristicsof MEC which significantly affects the survival outcome.Design: A retrospective studyMethod: A retrospective clinical study of40patient of salivary gland MEC treated inDepartment of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, Tongji Medical College, HUST from aperiod of2003to2011. The relationship between clinical characteristics andhistologic grade and survival rate was investigated with Kaplan-Meier survivalanalysis and log-rank test.Result: The5year overall survival rate and disease free survival rate was80.8%and60.7%. On univariate analysis those factors which were statistically significant foroverall survival was patient’s age, T status, N status, clinical stage and histologicgrade. Factors which were statistically significant for disease free survival werepatient age and histologic grade. Conclusion: In our study patient age and histologic grade were found to be importantin determining the survival outcome. Surgery should aim for complete surgicalexcision and postoperative radiotherapy should be considered for high grade tumorand should be considered as an adjunct while managing intermediate grade and forthose cases of low grade presenting with recurrence.
