Objective:The study was to investigate the physiological and psychological health of frontiermilitary personnel at high altitude in Xinjiang Military Area. Then we tried to put forwardcountermeasures and suggestions for the promotion of overall frontier military personnelhealth in plateau.Objects and Methods:In this physical health survey for Xinjiang Military Region officers and soldiers whowere garrisoned in the border, we selected4365cases from military hospitals in plateauregions of Xinjiang Military region from2009to2011. We selected3216male soldiersand the median±SD (range) age was20.65±2.21(18-37) years. There were1149officers and the median±SD (range) age was31.36±6.51(20-45) years. The surveyincluded gender, ethnicity, age, hospital number, title, discharge time, ICD coding, diagnosis, length of stay, treatment outcome and so on. Classification of Diseases wasreferred to "disease diagnosis and surgical operation name and code standards ApplicationGuide". Soldiers and officers were classified according to discharge diagnosis. Weinvestigated the oral health status and mental health status using questionnaire for the special environment in Xinjiang Military plateau. In total, we distributed questionnaires to352officers and soldiers in the Xinjiang Military and collecting up352copies. Besides, the questionnaires of eight soldiers were not complete and were excluded. So the last344officers were included in the study accounting for97.7%of the total number of surveys. We used Self-rated approach for oral health survey and SCL-90scale for mental healthsurvey. The database was encoded by professional statisticians and established usingExcel2003. Finally, data were analyzed using SPSS17.0software.Results:Due to the special circumstances of the Xinjiang Military plateau, the five leadingdisease systems were digestive system disease (23.4%), connective tissue disease(22.6%), respiratory system desease (15.9%), circulatory system disease (11.2%) andinjury and poisoning (4.87%). And the five leading disease were upper respiratory tractinfection (20.45%), peptic ulcer (12.69%), appendicitis (11.32%), bronchitis disease(10.86%), intervertebral disc disease (9.74%). For officers, the five leading diseases weredigestive system (20.12%), circulatory system (16.52%), the other (14.02%), autoimmune(12.52%), respiratory system (10.72%). The five leading diseases for officers in hospitalwere lumbar disc herniation (14.74%), peptic ulcer (13.61%), renal colic (10.86%),hypertension (10.65%), upper respiratory tract infection (10.45%). In addition, theincidence of dental disease in Xinjiang Military border plateau was higher than the generalpopulation in plains. We used internationally harmonized SCL-90scale for theinvestigation of mental health for Xinjiang Military border. After the analysis of thefactors in the scale, Xinjiang Military officers and soldiers suffered higher scores ofanxiety, hostility, and psychosis than that in the plains. Other factors were alsosignificantly higher than the plains troops. Other indicators did not change significantly,Conclusions:Through analysis of disease spectrum for hospitalized soldiers, we could see:digestive diseases, autoimmune diseases, circulatory system diseases as soldiers andofficers common diseases, upper respiratory infection, bronchitis disease, lumbar discherniation, appendicitis, hypertension, colitis, gastritis, peptic ulcer and urinary stones were among the leading ten diseases of soldiers and officers. In regard to the detectionrate of chronic diseases, digestive disease had the highest detection rate, followed byimmune system (such as rheumatoid arthritis) disease, and chronic digestive andautoimmune had highest proportion. Circulatory system diseases were the following. Thehighest score of mental health self-ratings of officers in the plateau region of XinjiangMilitary was anxiety and depression symptoms.Life of Xinjiang Military officers and soldiers in high altitude plateau border havesome impact on their physical and mental status, and these serious impacts have an impacton the lives of soldiers and training. How to more effectively control the impact, todevelop appropriate measures and to improve non-combat attrition was the future researchobjectives. For special geographical environment and climatic conditions in plateau, thecurrent forces at all levels have developed a number of relatively complete medicalsupport system, but, obviously, targeted not strong enough. In the future altitude militarymedical support, the leadership at all levels should attach great importance to thesignificance of the plateau medical support and take a more scientific and more effectivemeasures to improve the health level of the plateau border officers, thereby strengtheningthe ability to win.For the special geographical environment and climatic conditions in plateau, highlandtroops adopted many relative reasonable measures to health safeguard ability. However, the pertinence of these measures was not very effective. In the further, all leaders shouldattach great importance to the meanings of medical support in plateau and put forwardscientific and effective measures to guarantee plateau officers and soldier’s health, in orderto improve the battle efficiency of the stationed troops in the plateau region in order tostrengthen the ability of winning.
