Objective:To evaluate the clinical use and the result of the use of Vacuum Sealing Drainage (VSD) dressing prior to skin grafting in promoting wound healing in refractory wounds. Methods:A comparative evaluation was carried out to assess the performance of VSD dressing.40patients (23males and17females) who were treated for refractory wounds from September2011until August2013, were divided into2groups. Group A consists of the patients treated with VSD dressing, whereas group B is the control group, which treated with conventional gauze based dressings. Mean patients age was41.13years old (range:17-79years old). All patients have suffered from refractory wound due to chronic wound or acbute trauma. Results:The wound healing time in group A is23.3±3.2days, and32.2±5.1days in group B. t> t0.05/2,78, therefore P<0.05which proves that there is significant difference in the wound healing time duration between group A and group B. Improvement in quality of wound bed with decreased non-viable tissue and increased granulation tissue was observed in group A. Skin defects were successfully covered by healthy granulation tissue, proved by the survival of skin graft, especially in the group of patients treated with VSD dressings. Conclusions:NPWT using VSD dressing appears to be an effective addition to the care and management of wounds intended for definitive closure by STSG. VSD dressing was found to facilitate the rapid formation of healthy granulation tissue on various refractory wounds in the extremities, and thus, to improve the skin grafts take by the wound bed. The improvement of wound healing time and skin graft survival in the group of patients treated with VSD dressing shown that NPWT successfully promote wound healing in refractory wound.
