ObjectiveThe pathological change of Meniere’s syndrome (MS) is mainly manifested in membranous labyrinthine hydrops of cochleaes of inner ears. It is a common frequently-occurring disease, and its major clinical symptoms include vertigo, tinnitus, hearing loss, and aural fullness. Its cause and onset mechanism remain unclear, so there are no effective treatments in Western medicine. Western medicine has more toxic side effects, and surgery is in a sense harmful to the body. In Chinese medicine, MS is in the category of dizziness, and plentiful experiences in clinical treatments have been accumulated since ancient time. With the application of principles such as flushing phlegm, extinguishing wind and supplementing vacuity, a certain level of curative effect has been achieved in Chinese medicine. Acupuncture in particular is highly recognized both at home and abroad for its advantages such as quick efficacy, easy and convenient administration, free of toxic side effects, free of space constraint, and high acceptance by patients. MS is one of the 43 diseases using acupuncture as a treatment that are announced and promoted by the World Health Organization. Nevertheless, acupuncture prescriptions for treating this disease vary, and modern clinical literature about using acupuncture on MS abounds. Therefore, this study set goals in sort out acupoints law from qualified acupuncture literature, and in propose effective therapeutic point, in order to provide clinical reference.MethodsThis study the first to take electronic retrieval in the relevant literature CNKI database between 1980 and April 2014 by setting the inclusion and exclusion criteria.:A, to search full-text with keyword "Vertigo", retrieve the results with "acupuncture" and then retrieve the results with "Meunier disease"; retrieve the results with "acupuncture" and then retrieve the results with "Meunier disease"; B, to search "Meniere’s disease," retrieve the results with’acupuncture"; C, to retrieve "Vertigo", and then retrieve the results with "Acupuncture ", re-retrieve the results with " inner ear vertigo "; D, " Meunier "+" acupuncture "+" inner ear "full-text search keywords. And then to read proceeds through the manual, eliminate duplicate and unqualified chapter. Read articles and selected traditional records and calculation methods:first edited document number, credited the number of documents on each appear point, and mark the number of cases in each chapter numbers, and mark practice methods. Then count total number and list according to the way of diminishing. Moreover, For learning about the relevance between points, take the body points of five times the frequency of occurrence and above to do class cluster analysis by using statistical software SPSS 21. The methods is calculating the order of cohesion through the similarity matrix and Euclidean distance squared as the range to find out the connection relationships within the group. Finally, draw a points-tree of average connection and classify the standard of therapeutic points.ResultsThis study retrieved 55 qualified articles. Among them,13 are pattern-based, and 42 are non-pattern-based. The result shows that in non-pattern-based literature, a total of 46 acupuncture points are indicated, and most are acupuncture points along the governing vessel and the yang channel as well as special points. The top five frequently used acupuncture points are GV-20, PC-6, LV-3, ST-36, and GB-20. The scalp acupuncture is mainly applied at the vertigo-auditory area, and the auricular acupuncture is applied at the top five frequently used acupuncture points:Shenmen, Kidney, Interal ear, Sub-cortex and Spleen. The top five frequently used acupuncture points in the pattern-based literature are LV-3, GB-20, GV-20, SP-6 and ST-36 in the pattern of ascendant hyperactivity of liver yang; GV-20, ST-36, GB-20, PC-6 and CV-4 in the pattern of spleen qi vacuity; ST-40, GV-20, ST-36, PC-6 and GB-20 in the pattern of phlegm turbidity obstructing the center; GV-20, GB-20, SP-6, KI-3 and ST-36 in the pattern of kidney yin depletion; as well as ST-36, SP-6, GB-20, GV-20, and BL-23 in the pattern of kidney yang depletion. High Frequency Body points obtained the first group by cluster analysis is GV-20; the second group:P-6, Liv-3, ST-36,GB-20;the third group:Yintang, SI-19, T-17, SP-6, GB-2, Taiyang, GB-8, ST-40. The second group can be divided into two groups: P-6; Liv-3, ST-36, GB-20. The third group is divided into two groups:Yintang; SI-19, T-17, SP-6, GB-2, Taiyang, GB-8, ST-40.ConelusionMajority acupuncture treatment prescription of MS assemble the points GV-20, ST-36, and GB-20. It is concluded that both in the pattern-based and non-pattern-based literature, these are the basic acupuncture points that are most frequently used. In clinical practices, variations of formula are allowed in accordance with signs. The most frequently-seen combinations of acupuncture points are LV-3.SP6 for ascendant hyperactivity of liver yang, P6, CV-4, for spleen qi vacuity, ST-40, P6 for phlegm turbidity obstructing the center, SP-6.B23 for kidney yang depletion, and SP-6, KI-3 for kidney yin depletion. The scalp acupuncture is mainly applied at the vertigo-auditory area, and the most common auricular points are:Shenmen, Kidney, Internal ear. We can see the main treatment point is GV-20 from the cluster analysis, it is Monarch. The Minister points are:P-6, Liv-3, ST-3, GB-20.The points, Yintang, SI-19, T-17, SP-6,GB-2,Taiyang, GB-8, ST-40, have the power of messenger. It is provided with the thinking of diagnosis according to the course of the meridians and collaterals from the distribution of select points. Often used specific points, particular the intersection points and the five transport points(Wu Shu Xue). The local points of the largest selection are head points, and the most points all belong to Yang meridians orYang the governor of Yang meridians. The most common clinical practice case is especially in single-moxibustion point GB20. At the same time we can see MS is mostly Xu Zheng, Yang especially based, from the highest frequency of each point feature. Continuous stimulation on areas near a focus through the application of scalp and ear acupuncture alone has been proved to have amazing efficacy. However, there is relatively less literature about this practice. More experiences need to be accumulated by clinical practitioners.
