PurposeTo investigate the clinical efficacy and safety of microwave ablation combined with chemotherapy in treating advanced non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC) patients retrospectively. Methods50 patients with histologically verified advanced NSCLC were recruited and they all had at least one measurable site other than the ablative sites. Patients underwent microwave ablation in primary tumors, followed by platinum-based doublet chemotherapy. Modified response evaluation criteria in solid tumors(m RECIST) and RECIST were used to evaluate the response of MWA and chemotherapy, respectively. Complications were assessed using National Cancer Institute(NCI) Common Toxicity Criteria version 3.0(CTC3.0). ResultsA total of 50 percutaneous microwave ablation for 50 tumors of 50 patients were administrated. The mean and median tumor diameters were(3.71±1.49)cm and 3.5cm respectively, with the range of 1.00 cm to 8.00 cm. 24%(12/50) patients achieved partial response. No correlation between microwave ablation and clinicopathologic characteristics was observed. For chemotherapy, 24%(12/50)achieved partial response, 52%(26/50) showed stable disease, and 24%(12/50) had progressive disease. Totally the overall objective response rate(ORR) and disease control rate(DCR) was24%(12/50)and76%(38/50), respectively. The median progression free survival(PFS) was 11 months(95%CI, 6.946 ms to 15.054 ms). The mean overall survival was 24.367 months(95%CI, 19.216 ms to 29.518 ms). Complications were observed in 33 patients(66%) and grade 3 adverse events were observed in 6 patients(12%). ConclusionAdvanced NSCLC patients could benefit from MWA in combination with chemotherapy. Complications of MWA were common but tolerated.
