Objective: To analyze the effects and functions of the medicated diet in the ancient books of traditional Chinese medicine(published prior to the Republic of China) through the methods of philology and statistics, to make a classification of the meditated diet on the basis of the latest constitution theory-----the nine types of physical quality, to summarize the suitable food, edible Chinese herbs, and herbs for each type, in order to guide the daily diet for ordinary people eventually. At the same time, the author would establish database, use the medicated diet in nutrition, prevention and health management professionals so that the employees could get access to the related reference easily and improve work efficiency. As to ordinary people, they can choose the suitable diet in an accurate and quick way, which is safe and reliable. Under the background of carrying forward the culture of traditional Chinese medicine, this topic can contribute to the research and extension of medicated diet, promote the culture of medicated diet rehabilitation in traditional Chinese medicine, let it become closer to the ordinary people, meet people’s growing health needs, improve the level of the people’s health.Methods: First,through the medicinal food recorded in Chinese Medicated Diet Dictionary and Full Recording of Food Therapy Recipes of the Traditional Chinese Medicine, the author determined the books catalogue containing medicated diet. The inclusion and exclusion criteria were made based on the principle of safe, effective, full and accurate, the ancient books were referred to for a second time, and the medicated diets that conform to the inclusion criteria were collected eventually. The literatures were divided according to the name, type, source, author, dynasty, effect, component, production process, eating directions and attentions of the medicated diet, and all of those were input into an Excel table. Then on the basis of the differences in the definitions, main characteristics, and tendencies of nine constitutions, explored the detailed categorization method in combine with the effects and actions of medicated diet, and draw the Excel database of medicated diet for each constitution as a result. Finally imported data of the medicinal food formulas and dietary guidance into SQLserver2008, and established a database which facilitate query, data accumulation and application research, thus standardized the collection, sorting and research of medicated diet in ancient books.Results: A set of feasible way to categorize meditated diet was concluded according to the constitution. The first is keyword classification;The second is constitutive characteristic classification;The third is classification based on indications,subdivided into two branches, Firstly, constitutions that are susceptible to disease were divided directly. Secondly, it was classified based on the etiology and therapeutic principle. According to the methods above, the medicated diet were collected and classified as below: moderate constitution 132 herbal diet formula; qi-deficiency constitution 328 herbal diet formula; yang deficiency constitution 677 herbal diet formula; yin deficiency constitution 388 herbal diet formula; phlegm-dampness constitution 373 herbal diet formula; dampness-heat constitution 863 herbal diet formula; qi depression constitution 387 herbal diet formula; blood-stasis constitution 208 herbal diet formula; extraordinary constitution 28 herbal diet formula.Conclusion: According to the constitution theory of TCM, applied to daily life through unveiling the mystery of it. Once the application range of medicated diet is broaden, more individuals would be involved in health preservation and disease rehabilitation, and eventually make the full use of the simplicity, practicality, efficiency and cheapness of Chinese medicine.
