| Objective:This study investigates and compares superoxide dismutase(SOD) and malondialdehyde(MDA) levels in serum of the chronic periodontitis and type-2diabetes mellitus patients to discuss to associations between the the chronic periodontitis and type-2 diabetes mellitus patients.Method:This is a case-control study.Serum were obtained from systemically healthy subjects with chronic periodontitis(CP group)(n=20),diabetic subjects with chronic periodontitis(DM group)(n=24),diabetic subjects without chronic periodontitis(DMCP group)(n=23),systemically and periodontal healthy subjects(N group)(n=21) and periodontal parameters, blood glycated-haemoglobin, fasting blood-glucose and lipid levels, and serum-SOD activities and MDA levels were measured.A1 l the measurement data was expressed as(mean±standard deviation)and was analyzed by ANOVA test.Anumeration data was analyzed by chi-square test.Result:1.Comparison of clinical parameters among the four groups:periodontal parameters were higher in CP and DMCP groups than N and DM groups(P <0.05),while there was no difference between the CP and DMCP groups.HbAlc,FPG levels were higher in diabetic groups than the non-diabetic groups(P < 0.05).HDL levels were higher in diabetic groups than the N group(P<0.05).LDL and TCH levels in all groups did not significantly differ from each others. No differences existed between DM and DMCP groups in,HbAlc,and lipid levels And no differences existed between CP and N groups in HbAlc,glucose and lipid levels.2.Comparison of serum SOD and MDA levels among the four groups :SOD and MDA levels were higher in diabetic groups than non-diabetic groups(P <0.05).DM group had the highest SOD and MDA levels.CP group had the lowest SOD levels and N group had the lowest MDA levels.3.The relations between SOD and MDA levels and clinical parameters:In all subjects, statistically significant positive correlations were detected between serum MDA and SOD,FPG,TG,HbAlc. And statistically negative correlations were detected between MDA and ages. While there was statistically negative correlations between MDA and periodontal parameters. In all subjects, statistically significant positive correlations were detected between serum SOD and FPG,ages,HbAlc. And statistically negative correlations were detected between SOD and HDL,periodontal parameters. Conclusion:MDA and SOD levels were higher in diabetes than in periodontitis. And in all subjects, statistically significant positive correlations were detected between serum MDA and SOD,FPG,TG,HbAlc.And between serum SOD and FPG,ages,HbAlc.There was statistically negative correlations between SOD and HDL and periodontal parameters. |
